I am part of, at least to my knowledge, one of the longest standing poker games in South Jersey. A group of reprobates and fellow travelers that I call my friends meet the first of every month to play for nickels dimes and to catch up with whats been going on in each others lives. We have been doing so for the last ten years (ish). When we started out it was an excuse for us to get together it still is. I have known these individuals for the last give or take, 25 years for better or worse. Its a diverse group of similar individuals.
In between the questions, Just who are you going to vote for? and So, are you going to the reunion? was a question that got my attention; Who have you seen in concert? Now THAT was a good question something I could sink my teeth into. The roots of said question sprung from the fact that one of our members was able to procure 4 tickets to the AC/DC concert at the Wachovia Center in November; and 4 of the 7 of us, including yours truly, will be going (Lord willing and the creek dont rise).
This will probably be the last time that the band tours and I think theyre worth checking out before they hang up their guitars. In fact, on the short list of people I wouldnt mind seeing live; Angus and Co. rank pretty high.
So, sitting there at the poker table, I got to thinking; just who have I seen in concert? I compiled the following list of artists and a short blurb of info next to their listing. I dont remember dates but I do collect experiences. I might be leaving someone out so please bear with me. Here we go
Genesis my first real concert. It was the Invisible Touch tour. Great show. They opened with, and even covered some of Peter Gabriels stuff. Great show.
The Hooters I saw on the beach in Atlantic City as a free concert sponsored by WMMR. It was summer; I was in long pants why Ill never know. I almost passed out and met Pierre Robert for the second time.
Billy Joel Amazing show. I got into an accident on the way home from Philly. Since then I have learned to never shout, Lets do something crazy!
Aerosmith Good show in Philly.
Def Leopard Hey look, the drummer has one arm. Youd never know by the sound. This was a great show. They were in the round too. Awesome.
Skid Row Hair bands ATTACK!
Queensrych This was a truly pleasant surprise, it was during the Operation Mindcrime tour and they rocked. Theres no other way to put it. Great show.
Def Leopard Hey look, the drummers arm hasnt grown back yet. Great show once again. The new guitar player who replaced one who passed away did a wonderful job.
Chicago Peter Cetera just left but the band still brought the goods.
Chicago Hey, didnt I just see these guys?
Anderson, Buford, Wakeman Howe These are some of the founding members of the progressive band, . Very cool show, Anderson walked through the crowd at the Spectrum singing all the way to the stage; very cool indeed.
Jethro Tull Say what you will, this was a great show. As Ian Anderson says, A flute is a heavy metal instrument.
Phil Collins Ive always been a Phil fan and he delivered. Great stuff.
Chicago You know these guys are familiar.
Beach Boys I wasnt too thrilled to go to this show; BUT when you are there and the beach balls are being thrown everywhere and the music is so familiar and catchy you just cant help but be a Beach Boys fan. This I guarantee. Brian Wilson joined them on stage for a couple of songs as well. Too cool. Yeah, thats right I said it, the Beach Boys concert was too cool.
Yes I saw them in the round in Atlantic City; Old Yes and New Yes or West Coast Yes and East Coast Yes or whatever they were calling themselves. This was a great show.
Billy Joel even on a bad night Billy Joel is worth seeing. There will never be another like him. If you get the chance do so. Wow, what a musician.
George Thoroughgood the Delaware Destroyers Great stuff from someone who didnt get a haircut or a real job.
ZZ Top the little band from Texas. This was a lot of fun. If you like guitar heavy blues youve got to give em a listen. Nice. Great show.
Sting Sting is a consummate musician who suffers for his art. But be warned if you dont like jazz-fusion mixed with old tried and true favorites then you will be suffering too. I enjoyed the show, Mother Hen not so much.
Phil Collins This is my third and probably final time seeing Phil live. He was in the round (which is a great way to see a show) and it was wonderful.
Susana Hoffs Solo from the Bangles. Good stuff, compounded by the fact that I ran into her later in the casino. Great show. I stuttered. Oh yeah, Im a charmer or at least her bodyguards thought so.
Don Henley This was a great show. There were four of us who saw him in Atlantic City. Interesting evening. Did I mention it was a great show? All She Wants to do is Dance great song; great musician.
Bella Fleck and the Flecktones who knew that an electric banjo could be so cool? Not me. Im a convert now. Good stuff.
Dave Matthews Band I received these tickets for my birthday from Mother Hen. DMB is one of the great jam bands touring today. If you get the chance, take it. Wonderful show.
Jimmy Buffett Gentle Reader, as I have said before, I am a Parrothead. This was like mothers milk, or that cheeseburger that you so desperately need after sailing into that one particular harbor just at time. What can I tell you it was Jimmy and Im most certainly up to another chance to find that lost shaker of salt.
Billy Joel The Maestro is still in the house. Wonderful show.
Elton John Another fine piano man. What a great musician and showman. If you get the chance to see him take it; the greats are disappearing so if you get the opportunity do yourself a favor. Mother Hen and I saw him together with Billy Joel. Wed like to return to see a solid evening of Elton. Who knows it could happen!
Duran Duran Mother Hen and I saw them at the Tower Theater in Philly. What a great show. Seriously. Man, it brought back memories for both of us. It was the original lineup and Simon and Co. delivered.
Trans Siberian Orchestra If you are not familiar with TSO think orchestral Christmas Carols fused with the edge of electric power chords from 3 or 4 guitarists. There were between 30 to 40 people on stage with lasers and pyrotechnics. This was an amazing show to experience. Youve got to see them if you get the chance. You wont be disappointed.
I have been fortunate to see the shows that I have. There are those that Id see again in a heartbeat (Jimmy Buffett, TSO, the Hooters, even Duran Duran) and those I can say that Ive seen once and that was enough. These days I am a very simple man and my tastes drift. I wouldnt mind seeing X, Dan Zanes, Mac McAnally, Ingrid Lucia and the Flying Neutrinos or even AC/DC.
So there you have it; thats the list to the best of my recollection at this point. So how about YOU what are some of your favorite concert experiences.

Texas holdem has a specialized poker lingo that pros and experienced amateurs understand. If youre just learning the rules of Texas holdem, some of these terms may be confusing.
Below are explanations for some of the more common terms in Texas holdem poker.
Mucking the hand
To muck your hand means to fold it or kill it. Once a hand is mucked, it is no longer eligible to win the pot. A hand is considered officially dead when your two face down cards touch other dead cards or the cards on the board.
Muck can also be used as a noun, as in, your hand is dead when it hits the muck (the other dead cards) or s get this game out of the muck (create a better, more action-packed game rather than the current bogged-down, dull game).
Moving all in
When you are all-in, it means all your remaining chips are in the pot. Live and online casino Texas holdem poker games are played for table stakes, meaning you do not need to and cannot pull more money out of your pocket.
If you do not have enough money to cover the last bet, you only go all-in for the money you have, and any money you cannot match goes into a side pot that only those able to match the full bet can win.
Having your hand cracked
This means to have a very good hand beaten by an inferior hand. Usually this is used to refer to pocket aces, as in: I always raise pre-flop so my pocket aces dont get cracked by some garbage hand like 75 off-suit when the flop comes K 7 5.
Having the nuts
The best hand possible. If you have 7 5 and the flop is 4 6 8, you hold the nut straight. As long as all three cards are not of the same suit, this is also the nuts, since no one can have a better hand. If the flop is 9h Th Qh and you hold Ah 5h you have the nut flush, although this is not the nuts because someone could have Jh Kh or Jh 8h for a straight flush.
If you have a hand that is the nuts and no card can come on the turn or river to beat you, for example As Ad on a board of Ac Ah 6s, you have the stone cold nuts, absolute nuts, unbreakable nuts or the Holy City.

Having a digital camera, whether you have a plan to make a career out of photography or you are simply a hobbyist, is obviously important. But before buying a digital camera, there will be a lot of things to take note of. Camera accessories are one but an important feature is photo software. Many are available in the market while you can also download some in the internet. Also, digital cameras cost more out of the box than regular cameras, but offer the convenience of immediate viewing, multiple image storage, computer connectivity - and theres no film to develop. Compare additional features you might want: interchangeable lenses, steady-shot, burst mode, auto exposure, automatic white balance, voice memo, variable shutter speeds, manual focus and self-timer.
In the past, photography was a costly and time-taking business. This meant photographs were taken cautiously so as not to waste film. Only the richest companies could afford to take hundreds of pictures knowing that only one would be chosen out of the bunch. Nowadays, because of technological advancements, amateur photographers do not need to worry about finances or the amount of time it will take them to produce one photograph. Experimentation is possible for anyone, and more relaxing and enjoyable. When it used to take hours to process a picture, it can now take under that to process several, and amateurs can benefit greatly.
It is usually taken for granted that white is white, with no variations. However, all artists would agree that this is wrong, including photographers. The white balance of a camera can make or break a picture, meaning you must learn to control it. In order to regulate it, you must set your camera to manual or custom white balance, and take a picture of something white. It must fill the screen, and should not be in shadows. If the result is not to your preference, you can always use your photo program to tweak the picture.
Quality sports shots are somewhat difficult to come by. Most people have limited access to events to photograph them. The further away you are from the event, the harder it becomes to capture the event in a pleasing manner. You may need a flash with a high output for photographing indoor events. The new modern flash systems produce great results. Some sporting events like gymnastics and others are no-flash events. It is best to talk to an event official before using your flash.
In computing, JPEG is a commonly used method of compression for photographic images. The name JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, the name of the committee that created the standard. JPEG itself specifies how an image is compressed into a stream of bytes and decompressed back into an image and the file format used to contain that stream. The compression method is usually lossy compression, meaning that some visual quality is lost in the process, although there are variations on the standard baseline JPEG which are lossless. There is also an interlaced format, in which data is compressed in multiple passes of progressively higher detail. This is ideal for large images that will be displayed whilst downloading over a slow connection, allowing a reasonable preview before all the data has been retrieved. However, progressive JPEGs are not as widely supported.
If you use a flash in a dark environment, you often get a red eye effect. This is because the light of the flash is reflecting from the retina, which is covered with tiny blood vessels. The more open the pupils are, the more red eye effect you get in your photos. Red eye is more pronounced in people with light eye color. It is also more pronounced in people with blond or light-red hair and in children. Many cameras have a built-in red-eye reduction pre-flash that helps reduce the incidence of red eye. Red-eye reduction works by having the flash shine a light into the eyes of the subject prior to taking the picture. This causes the pupil to contract. However, you have to make sure the subject is looking at the camera. If not, this technique wont work. Also be wary of using red-eye reduction feature when not necessary, because it may cause your subject to blink.
How do you begin to take good photos? The first thing to remember is this: Its the photographer that takes great photos, not the camera. Think about that for a minute. Its true isnt it? Ive seen some people take great photos with a simple point-and-shoot camera, while some take lousy shots with the most expensive SLR. Always look for beautiful natural light. The best natural light usually occurs right before, after, and during sunrise and sunset. Be deliberate and creative. Think about what would make a good background, what would make for good colors. When you set out on a picture-taking spree, shoot 10 to 25 pictures so that you can be sure of getting a good shot. Vary the distance, setting, poses, or even the times of day.

Reraising Preflop
There are three main reasons for adopting a more aggressive reraising strategy to effectively combat the stealer. Reraising punishes the stealer, sets up profitable postflop play, and establishes variation.
1. Punish the opposition.
Im not the first person to suggest reraising to slow down your opponent on future action. In fact, Sklansky and Malmuth make it apparent that it is critical for your opponent to worry that a raise will cost more than it appears. As they say, He needs to know that hes in jeapordy of a reraise. Thus you frequently reraise for the sake of future hands, not the hand that you are holding.
But is reraising 10% of your hands enough? 10% represents the cream of the crop: AA-99 (6 possible combinations each), AK-AT(16 combinations each), KQ(16), KJs(4), KTs(4), QJs(4), JTs(4). These hands are so dominating that many of them would be 3-bet in a full ring game. Versus a steal raise, the selection is too thin.
More importantly, reraising 10% of the time will likely not even affect a blind stealing opponent who is raising 100% of the time preflop. Out of 10 hands, the stealer will immediately win the blinds 6 times, play on the flop against an out of position caller 3 times, and face a reraise only once. In this situation, even against a reraise, it becomes pretty easy for the small blind to fold if the flop doesnt hit him hard, since he knows he is competing against a premium hand.
2. Set up Flop play.
If youre going to be in the hand to the end, you might as well get the money in early. Im not sure where I read or heard the above advice, but it makes a lot of sense. With a powerful hand, you want to put pressure your opponent and make him pay for the right to outdraw you. You want to earn the most money possible, and fundamentally, you want to get your money in while you are ahead. (This is an oversimplification, but it works for shorthanded play due to a concept called .)
Mason Malmuth wrote about shorthanded play in Poker Essays, a good book for advanced players to hone specific theories. Concept No. 3: Be prepared to go to the river. Basically, if your hand is strong and unless the board develops in a very scary manner, you will often want to showdown. Since you will be going to the river with many hands, you should get the money in early, which makes a showdown strategy more likely to be correct and profitable in the long run.
A second factor is initiative. I mentioned above that most preflop stealers will not be affected by reraises, especially those raising 100% of the time preflop. In my experience, most opponents simply fold if the flop didnt hit their hand since they expect to be against a monster hand. Even those who do not habitually steal raise will still respect an opponent who reraised preflop. In other words, if you are the big blind and raise with a hand like JTs, you should virtually always bet on the flop, even if the flop misses entirely. Putting the pressure back on your opponent is critical. Opponents may simply concede on the flop, expecting to be against a very powerful hand and not wishing to pay a turn and river bet to see a showdown.
3. Establish variation.
The third reason to increase aggression preflop and reraise with a wider selection of hands addresses the predictability of the play. 10% narrows the possible hands considerably, and it creates an undeniable problem if the flop arrives with 3 rags. Under Sklansky and Malmuths advice, you would be reraising with big cards 3 out of 4 times; this is simply too predictable against even average competition.
So, what is appropriate for a reraise preflop from the big blind? What if we added 88-66(6 combinations each), KJo(12), KTo(12), QJo(12), QT(16), A9s-A2s(4 combinations each), T9s(4), and 98s(4)? The total is an additional 110 hands, which progresses the amount of reraising hands to 18.25% of total hands. Notice that most of these hands can be taken to a showdown, yet they create enough variation to make any flop potentially dangerous for your adversary.
Watching the opposition
An aggressive counterstrategy is only part of the equation. You will still be calling with other hands. You will still need to vary your play to keep your opponent off your scent. I recommend slowplaying AA or KK sometimes, reraising with lesser holdings on occasion, and following up with occasionally unpredictable flop play. Keep them guessing. Meanwhile, watch your opposition. Preflop, you will adjust your standards in the same direction as your opponent. If the small blind stops raising half the time, you should not call as often, since you will too often be playing bad cards with bad position, a costly combination. Reraising is still valuable but should be reduced as well. You want to slow down against an opponent who raises only with legitimate hands.
In addition, you must consider the postflop play of your opponent. If the opponent plays very well with position: earning extra bets, staying aggressive, and following a solid bluffing strategy, then he will earn a significant advantage each hand played on the flop. With your higher postflop burden, you must adjust by folding more preflop. Against an expert, you will fold quite often (and therefore call less than Sklansky and Malmuths recommended strategy). The important thing to note is that you will be losing money by folding the big blind more often. Repeat: YOU WILL BE VOLUNTARILY LOSING!!!! But you will lose less money folding than playing marginal hands that cost extra bets after the flop. Sometimes (often) you cannot win in the big blind of a heads-up matchup; your best choice is simply to minimize losses. Dont worry; youll make your profits when you are in position and have the advantage.
Slow em Down
Finally, a good preflop game will complement the overall strategy. Getting the money in early with the best hand will help to mitigate your positional disadvantage to some degree. But the best reason to stay aggressive may be intimidation. If you can scare your opponent into slowing down, you will begin to win the blinds for free, and you will not be forced to play at a disadvantage so often. In other words, you want your opponent to stop raising your blinds. So snarl (metaphorically) and attack back! Until next time, good luck.

In my first article for this site I outlined many of the reasons why shorthanded is more profitable than a full game for any serious player. One of these points was that most people make even more mistakes in a short game than they do at a full table. They are getting better pot odds at a full table with more players, and so these mistakes are also less painful on their longshot draws. In shorthanded, however, with most pots getting head up quickly, they pay a huge price for drawing to marginal hands.
Today Ill be covering many of the common mistakes that are made at shorthanded poker, as well as going over why they are such big errors.
Limping with Big Pairs
This is simply inexcusable.
In a shorthanded game (as with a late position raise at a full table), people expect you to be raising light and trying to steal the blinds. Theyve seen many players raising on weak hands in shorthanded, and they are out to be the sheriff and call you down in the hope that youre bluffing. Why, then, would you limp with a big pair? If theyre willing to give you action, why wouldnt you get the most money in the pot as possible when you have the best of it?
The reason some people do this is because they are trying to trap the blinds by limping in with AA on the button when everyone has folded to them. They hope that by disguising their hand, they will earn more money on later streets. Well, Ive got news for you, this isnt no-limit where you have the huge implied odds and potential to get your opponents entire stack after he flops a 2nd best hand that he thinks is good.
Even in no limit, Id still usually raise with a big pair in late position because people arent going to give you credit for a hand. They expect you to be stealing there and will happily defend their blinds. Stop limping with big pairs, the only one losing money on that play is you!
Cold Calling Raises
This is true in full table games as well, and definitely the worst play in poker if you ask me. There are certainly situations where you are going to cold call a raise, but it is very rare and happens less than once a session on average. You should generally reraise or fold with a raise in front of you.
By cold calling a raise you are usually getting the worst of the situation. You could easily be in big trouble in hand values, depending on who the raiser is and what hand you are cold calling with. I know when I find someone who is cold calling raises with any two big cards like KTo, QJo, QTo, etc I know Ive found a gold mine. We all know there are plenty of players out there who will happily put in two bets cold preflop with one of these trouble hands too.
The reason this play is so bad is because not only could you be in trouble in the actual hand values department, but you are giving up the initiative and will usually have to forfeit the pot to the raiser when you miss. While you can argue that if you hit your hand and the raiser misses he will simply fold to your bet, you will not be hitting your hand as much as youll be missing and giving up all of those bets to him. This is one of the central ideas in shorthanded since you want to avoid as many marginal spots as possible.
Cold calling a raise with KQ, suited or unsuited, is a terrible play in a short game. In a full game, you can usually cold call a raises with KQ suited because you know some other people are coming into the pot or have already entered, and youll be getting big odds on a hand that is excellent multiway. Shorthanded is more about heads up play and taking down uncontested pots, so if you decide the raiser is raising light, you should reraise rather than call simply because you gain back the initiative and put the pressure on him to hit the flop. In most cases against a respectable raiser though, KQ is not a hand I want to have head up and the best play is just to muck it preflop and stay out of trouble.
In full table, some of the hands that actually warrant cold calling a raise would be JJ and TT, but that all changes in shorthanded. If theres a cold caller in between, then you probably have to just call and hope you flop an overpair, but with nobody in between your best play is to just reraise and get everyone else out. While its said constantly on TV that two unpaired overcards against a smaller pocket pair is a situation, you can change this situation in limit poker. If you reraise with jacks or tens and everyone else folds, hell most likely just call (if he caps it you are in trouble unless hes a real loose raiser) and take a flop. If he misses, hell usually peel a card, but then fold to a bet on the turn unless he has some sort of gutshot draw or backdoor flush. Can you see how this will win you some pots that would otherwise have been lost if you played your hand passively? I want to note too that there are some people that will cap heads up with AK, but they are a minority and when you find one of them you just deal with them accordingly and dont let them push you into a passive stance.
QJ Offsuit
You look down at your hole cards to find an offsuited QJ. Bells are going off in your head, youve just picked up two face cards, a real monsterright?
Sorry, not this time.
QJ offsuit is possibly the most deceptive hand in poker, and will do nothing but get you into kicker trouble and all sorts of bad situations. Unless you make two pair or the nut straight, this hand has very little value because you can never be truly sure where youre at. One thing you can be sure about, however, is that if someone is raising you back after you hit that Q63 rainbow flop, youre almost undoubtedly beaten.
The hand really has nothing to offer, with a meek Queen high preflop that will never hold up in any real heads up confrontation where neither player makes a pair and there is a showdown. What this means is that there is almost no incentive to raise with just overcards after the flop with this hand because if you get called, youre dead meat. This is not the case with AK, because it is the nut no pair and therefore beats any busted draw. QJo doesnt even beat the busted nut flush draw unless you get them to fold.
The real problem, however, comes when you make just one pair and are outkicked. Most of the other good hands outkick QJ making it a huge dog in any raised pot. So why would you ever want to play this hand? You cant really raise with it because you dont have much if you get called, and you have to pay off when youre beaten plenty of times. At least when its suited you have the trap door to make a flush. The answer is that you really shouldnt ever want to be playing a QJo. Yet plenty of people have never folded the hand preflop unless it was three bets to go.

Playing Poker online can be quite satisfying, and financially rewarding, if one uses the best possible online poker strategies. Some online poker players simply rush into games and hands without thinking about their options. This usually leaves the unsuspecting online poker player with a lot less money than he or she started with. With these four easy tips, you can help yourself avoid the pitfalls of many poker players.
1. Don?t be afraid to enter tournaments. Poker tournaments can often be the most fun and the most profitable. It has been said that tournaments depend largely on luck, but don?t let that deter you. A solid poker player can make great strides in any type of game. However, luck certainly is a factor. You should be conscious of the buy-in and be willing to lose that amount of money. As you get deeper and deeper into the tournament, the blinds will increase and you should closely monitor the flop. In some of the cheaper online tournaments, new players will lose their money extremely fast. It is important to capitalize on this if you have a good hand. Playing a tournament came can be very fun, so any serious poker player should try to enter and win at least one tournament.
2. If you must, switch your table. It is a very good idea to switch the poker table you?re playing at least once a session. This is especially important if other players at a certain table have started to notice your habits. Also, a fresh set of opponents means a fresh set of betting habits and a fresh set of money. The advantages to staying at one table are familiarity with opponents, but your poker experience will certainly be more rewarding if you switch around tables.
3. Manage your money wisely. In order to have poker success, you must be financially savvy. Set limits for yourself based on your poker ability, financial situation, and your aversion to taking risks. It is always a good idea to set a lower limit because the competition is often easier there. Some players play games at two different limits. This can be quite beneficial. Playing in an easier game just for safety, and playing in a tough game can lead to increased winnings. Also watch your betting. Never bet too high too often, because this almost always leads to trouble. Finally, be mindful of short run and long run gains. Using lower limits will lead to gains in the long run, but high limits have the potential for gains in the short run. The best idea is to play to your strengths and to not lose all your money in the short run.
4. Know when to quit. This is a very important concept to grasp. Some poker players keep playing and playing until they have serious financial issues. If you keep playing in order to ?break even? then you have played for too long. Additionally, if you start to lose your focus on the game and other opponents, and you constantly think that everyone is bluffing, than you have been playing too long. Even the best poker players have good days and bad days. One element that makes a poker player truly great is that he or she knows when to stop playing. If you start to feel as if you must play just one more hand, than you should stop playing immediately. Quitting at the right time can save you quite a bit of money and will lead to more enjoyable poker experiences in the future.
Online poker can be very fun, and also has the potential to be profitable. The best suggestion is to simply play smart. Keep an eye on your bets, and don?t hinder yourself by taking on too many hands. Know when to quit and manage your money wisely. Change tables every now and than for variety. Last, but certainly not least, have fun!
