Taking place at the Regency Airport Hotel in Dublin, the Poker Open will not only be a poker tournament but also will be an excellent chance to learn about the game from top professionals. On Friday (Oct. 17th), 2005 World Series of Poker final table participant Andrew Black will host a seminar on tournament poker that should give tournament players key tips on preparing for such a large event. The seminar will be followed by a QA session with Black, who has nearly $4 million in earnings in his poker career.

goody two-shoes of the world running poker? I don't.
Should there be rules for player conduct? Well, of course there should. But the key in my opinion is the enforcement at the tables and that must include a clear, unmistakable warning system. I have suggested that something like the "yellow card" in soccer. You see when the yellow card is shown, the referee requires that the player acknowledge the warning. They know they have been warned. Let my give you a recent example of the current fuzzy rules.
Phil Hellmuth was given a one round penalty at the end of play on Day Five in this year's WSOP main event. As you know that penalty was rescinded before Day Six began. Now, I was there for that incident and I can tell you that no penalty should have been given. Why? Was Phil not out of line? No, he definitely was. However, Phil has been warned many times in the past and never, repeat never given a penalty. Why would he think the warning meant anything different this time. Secondly, when he finally given the penalty, Phil looked at the Tournament Director and said: "You think they put my on the television table to be quiet?" Of all the lines I have ever heard Phil deliver that was the most telling. Phil is a draw, they want him to be Phil and yet at some point they decided it was what? Too much Phil? How is he supposed to know where that line is? So in this case, based on the rules as they now stand, I completely agree with the penalty being rescinded.
You want rules, fine; how about we let poker players decide on what is and is not a good rule. The F-Bomb has been modified and now, in theory, is only, enforced if you direct the expletive at a player or staff person. The old 100% ban was just not well thought out and fortunately has been changed. However, a floor may, at any time, warn a player that their language is out of line and must stop or they will receive a penalty. Either of those clauses could have and should have been invoked in the case of Scotty Nguyen; they were not. So why should Scotty change his behavior, it made for great TV and no one told him to stop.
Now, wait you say, why shouldn't we have stricter rules to keep the poker table civil and friendly. The simple reason is that people making rules just don't know when to stop. Don't believe me. Here is another "rule" from the World Poker Association. WPA Rule #13. TV Final Table Clothing: Collared shirts and/or sports jackets are required for men; smart casual clothing for women. And let's make sure everyone has a manicure, you know all those close up shots of a player's hands; heaven forbid someone has excess cuticle.

I hate players who take it upon themselves to denote every dumb play at the poker table:
“Terrible play… donk… bad bluff… donk… stupid… donk”
First of all, get a new word. At this point, donk is a donkish term for bad play. Secondly, if there were no “donks” out there making stupid moves then the only way that any one would ever make money would be through being on the right side of cold decks. So don’t go hating on bad players because if it wasn’t for them, then your genius play would just be run-of-the-mill crap gambling gambling. It is in part because of the donkeys that poker is as profitable as it is.
Frankly, I’m sick and tired of people scaring perfectly bad players away and then being forced myself to sit in the brewing stew of super-tight-know-it-all-pot-odds-shackled players. Life is too short to spend your time with judgmental tightwads.
So I’ve got a plan. It’s a small plan and kind of trivial, but it’s a start.
In the spirit of the many great acronyms that the internet has given birth to: lol, lmao, gg, gl, own, pwn, etc, I give you dBAD (pronounced dee – bad) which stands for “don’t be a douchebag.”
Say you are at a table and a guy calls two other all-ins holding pocket fives. Now the guy with the fives is obviously way behind and making a mathematically unsound decision – to say the least – when a six miraculously hits the turn, giving the idiot the winning Number of the Beast.
One guy who lost holding QQ forces out “nh” while two other uninvolved players limit their chat to “wow.” And then comes the inevitable attack from a guy who had nothing to do with the hand itself but cannot abide such behavior at the poker table… his poker table:
“For making a call like that you sure have a lot to learn about poker.” As true as that may be, what good does it do anyone to say that?
So what do you do?
“dBAD”
And even though that guy won’t get it the first time, our movement will grow. Like a revolution, dBAD will grow upon the fingertips of even-tempered poker players everywhere, shutting down the wannabe Matusows and Tony Gs with an acronym of defensive aggression and sleek musicality (seriously, doesn’t dee bad just sound cool?)
So if you are sick of whiny know-it-alls spewing their hateful advice wherever and whenever bad luck strikes at the poker table, join me in proclaiming loudly and in 3/4s caps lock glory:
dBAD.

Like a tiny snowball causing a giant avalanche, making a small mistake while playing poker can lead to disastrous consequences. This is especially true while playing no-limit Texas Hold’em. The ability to put your entire stack on the line at any time greatly increases the impact that a single mistake can make. The earlier in a hand that you make a mistake, the more time that mistake has to snowball into an avalanche of bankroll destruction.

The URL at the bottom of this article contains a list of the best online poker sites available along with a short description. If you already play online then you should still check out the ones listed. All the sites I have listed are both Macintosh and PC friendly. Also each site rewards the player differently. For example the site listed with the highest recomendation allows you to cash in player points for tournament tickets. It has a large selection wich you may choose from and that vary in point cost so that you dont need too many to start taking advantage of this feature. Take a few minutes and look through the list and see what catches your eye. Also the top rated site has a 500% first deposit bonus up to $1000 wich is the highest I have ever seen offered by any of the onliine poker sites. Just highlight the URL and paste it into your browser. Good luck at the tables.

5 Comments Playing cards were invented by jesters, and were used to entertain royalty. In fact, each King in the deck represents a King from history, but thats another story. The point is: card tricks were invented before real poker games were. You need to be aware that not every poker player you play against is going to be a legitimate opponent, and may be either an opportunistic cheat (catching a glimpse of a card without saying anything) or a card mechanic (being able to rig the deck to his favour). The term Cold Deck refers to switching the deck to a deck that is physically colder than the one that was in play. Usually, the deck is pre-stacked and the dealer will perform a series of false cuts shuffles and then deal the cards. Of course, he wins the hand.
Online Casinos
Someone asked me whether or not online casinos (or casinos in general) rig hands. In legitimate casinos, Id say most definitely not - because theyre regulated quite strictly and would be out of business in no time at all. As far as online casinos go, well, thats a little bit different There are no checks in play to see whether theyre dealing fairly and randomly. Itd actually be quite feasible for them to deal two large-stacks strong hands, and build a significant pot in order to increase their rake. Doing this even 1 in 10 hands would increase the poker rooms income 2fold. By no means am I saying that online casinos are doing this, just that its possible and you should be aware of it.
Player Advantage
This ones a little more common, and easier to spot. This can only be done in either free tournaments or home games (or any sort of poker games where the deal is passed around). Player X has a stacked deck sitting under the table, rigged to his advantage, and is ready to swap it when the deal is passed around to him When it does, he swaps the decks, performs a series of false cuts/shuffles (quite easy for even amateur card mechanics to do) and then deals the cards He takes down a large pot. Watch out for players that pull the deck under the table when theyve got the cards in their hands. Make sure the deck is cut by another player before the hand is dealt.

Poker is Teh Suck for me lately.

St. Louis

Met up with fellow effers Zerb and Khanwoman in St. Louis a couple weekends ago. The plan was to play the 4pm tournament at Lumiere. Turns out they changed the time to noon without telling anybody. I got there about 1pm only to find out that there wasn't going to be a tournament for us to play there that day. I sat at 1/3 NL and spewed playing small pairs and hitting nothing but 2 oesds that never got there. I managed a small come back then spewed the rest of my stack when ATs A8c when he hit 4 to a straight on turn and flushed me on the river.

Khanwoman really wanted to play a tournament. Turns out Harrah's had one running at 9pm and was only about 30 minutes from where we were. After an really good dinner at Asia at the Lumiere we head over to Harrah's. I sat a 1/2 NL table and made all of 8$ before the tournament started.

For future reference, the night time weekend tournaments must be for idiots. We paid $90 each to play this thing only to find out it was 15 minute blinds and 1500 in starting chips. Granted the starting blinds were 10/15 but still. They ramped up fast. Totally not worth the money IMO. I would have much rather stayed at the 1/2 table with my 90$.

After I busted out of the tourney I sat at a 1/2/5 PLO table with a bunch of regulars. I should have known better but it turned out to not cost me very much. I played a mere 2 hands one to a $15 raise. I whiffed on both flops and promptly folded. What amazed me the most was how much these people sucked. Their hand selection consisted of any two suited cards with a pair, any suited A, any big pair, any two pair hand... you get my drift. I was shocked.

The biggest hand that went down was really amazing. The younger guy on my left raised pf and got called in two spots. Flop: TT4, two clubs. He leads with a pot bet, fold, shove by one of the older regulars. Young guy tanks and the older regular gets all chatty. Says he's on a flush draw blah blah blah. Young guy eventually calls all in and shows AA66. The older guy says he's on a flush draw and shows J9c then slow rolls his 44. What a dick. Young guy knows he's drawing to 4 outs. Lucky for him the river brings him an A for the bigger boat. The older guy walked off while his buddy tells the kid, "You gotta know when he sticks his chips in he's got it. Blah blah blah... even I don't call in that spot blah blah blah".

Let's recap, the guy called a raise with Jc9c44. Stellar move. Then talks the kid into calling saying he's on a flush draw. Slow rolls the shit outta the kid. Then storms off when he gets sucked out on. GG, sir.

Cash at Moran's

My mother's shuttle arrived at 10:20pm the night of Moran's cash game. I figured that was a perfect excuse to go play: it would keep me up long enough to go get her. One guy had already busted out of the game by the time I got there. We were 5 handed. I tried to play hands in position but still couldn't manage to hit anything. I spewed. It was only a $20 buying and I left down $7 but I had a good time so I can't complain at all.

Gordo's Home Game

Next I went to Gordo's home game for a $15 buy-in tourney. There were 16 runners and I definitely got the best table. These guys were a riot! Here's just a small sample of the table banter:

R to G: who was that guy at your last game?
G: Max?
R: it starts with a G
G: I have no clue...
R: Marshall!
G: Yeah cause that starts with a G
S: yeah a silent G, no gh!

I have no idea why but that was friggin hilarious to me. Good thing the table banter was so good because my cards were proportionally as bad. I saw one pp (66) and one suited A (A9h). The rest was pure crap. I did get to see a cheap flop from the small blind with 89s; the flop was nasty and it got checked around until the river where I bluffed at it only to get called by a naked A. I play so goooooooot.

I ended up shipping with KTo only to get called by the UTG limper who had.... wait for it.... K8soooooooooooted. Of course the bitch hits her flush on the river. NH, GG, IGHN.

Fike's Cash Game

It's a $20 buyin with 6 players. I spew a little at first then buckle down and win a few pots. I did make one nice bluff but I shouldn't have shown it like I did. A few hands later I pick up AKs UTG and raise it up only to get 3bet by a guy who would do that with a wide range of hands especially considering the bluff I had just shown. I figured I was in pretty good shape here and shipped it in. I totally underestimated his stack; I had him covered but not nearly by as much as I thought. He insta-called with his 66. He flopped a 6 and that was the end of that.

It was nearly quitting time when I raced my AK and lost. I had about $6.50 left and shoved it with AJo only to win the blinds. At this point the guy on my right had started shoving every hand. I picked up A8 and figured I was probably in pretty good shape against his range and called his shove. He turns over 99. Rut row. Flop brings a 9 and the river quads him up just in case I didn't feel like a big enough idiot already.

Ok, maybe it isn't poker that teh sucks. Maybe.

Poker, At a distance from the Table

Chicago itself doesnt really have casinos.  We have a few just over the border in Indiana.  But I live in the northwest suburbs and so I have to travel all the way around the city to get to those casinos (translated: 45-90 minutes each way).
What we do have is Rockford Charitable Games.  They put on many days of every week where they have live poker and at least some of the money goes to a charity.  Last night it was right in my neck of the woods.  For background, I had a weird day.  It was probably the wrong day to be playing poker.  I got up at 4:30 AM to catch a 6:30 AM flight to Midland, Michigan to meet with a customer and then back home again at 7 PM.  So I drove right from Ohare to this banquet hall where they were holding this event.
How was it?  Well, on one hand I was impressed.  They have roughly 12 cash tables in operation spreading $1/2 NLHE, $3/6 NLHE and $2/5 LHE.  They also had a big $200 MTT with at least 3 tables running and several SNGs running at $25, $50 and $115.  The tables were mostly full.
I started the night playing a $25 SNG which was a waste of money.  We got $1600 chips, with starting blinds of 25/50 and the blinds doubled every 8 minutes.  So in 24 minutes if I played no hands I would have 8 big blinds.  I had only 32 big blinds in the first round.  It was kinda sick.  Two players were running the table with raw aggression (but showing down some good hands).  I made a couple of bad plays and found myself in level 2 with only 500 left (5 BBs).  I open raised all-in from MP with A7o and was called by the BB with J7s.  She caught a flush on the river and I was gone.
So I walked over to the $1/2 tables.  I bought in max for $150.  Early on I raised to $8 pre-flop with As 9s and had 2 callersboth the LAGs at the table.  The flop came Jc 3c 9d.  One of the LAGs who had called from the blind bet out $15 and I called.  The turn came 9c and he bet out $15 and I re-popped him for $45 and he called.  The river came a fourth club and I hated my life.  He checked and I checked behind.  He had 6c Tc and so hed caught the flush on the turn and believed that potentially I had made a higher flush.  I dont think that if Id have pushed on the river he would have folded.  So that cut my stack way down early.
I played the night mostly tight which meant that I was being run over by LAGs all night.  There was no shortage of them.  We had lots of limping and lots of semi-bluffing.  There were middle pairs winning all night.  When I had a decent hand, I would get run out of it by a pot sized bet from someone with middle pair and a gutshot straight draw.  It was sick.  I lost two more big hands: once where I flopped two pair with KQ on a KQ9x board and went all in.  The villain called with JJ and caught a T on the river for the straight and the other time when I had JJ and the board came 99J and I pushed and was called with 94s and the river gave him the fourth 9.  In these two hands I did the right thing by getting in when I was ahead.  It happens.
Either way, it didnt feel good.  I wasnt comfortable and I felt like I was outgunned.  Some of it was the cards.  I was dealt absolute crap all night.  I think I saw 7T like 50 times in 300 hands.  I got dealt pocket queens twice and won with it twice for smallish pots.  Apart from that, I think I got pocket 7s, 6s and 2s once each and never caught a set.
The hardest part of the night was that there was one very good LAG at the table.  He was loose and had great instincts.  If I had nothing and decided to bluff he called.  If I had something, he folded.  Im not sure if I was throwing off some tellseither physically or with my bet sizebut he had my number (or got lucky a lot).  I honestly dont know how best to play on a table full of LAGs.  I know conventional wisdom says play TAG, but most of these LAGs were smart and would fold when I bet OR had caught and punished me with huge raises that I either called (and lost) or folded to.  Ill need to develop a strategy for this.
It seems like people who go to these events are poker players.  They are people that have had to work to seek out the game and have generally come a good distance to play.  In other words, there arent a lot of fishno tourists, no casual players, no people who are there to play black jack but have watched WPT on TV and want to try their hand at poker.  These are people who play poker.  I was the fish, the casual player, the guy who thought he could play.
Anyway, I lost a good amount and felt like crap about my game.  So I went home and beat up on some online $.5/.10 tables.  I ended up just up slightly, but only because I was just messing around.  At one point I was way up but lost a lot of it when I ran up against quads (for the record, thats twice in one nightonce live and once onlinewhat are the odds?).  It didnt matter whether I won or not.  It had the desired effect of boosting my confidence.
So, would I recommend playing at a Rockford Charitable Games event?  Hmmmif you are jonesing for some live poker and dont mind a loose, fast game with solid players, then yes.  If youre looking for a game with challenging yet beatable poker including some tourists and casual players, then no.
In other news
I started reading the twoplustwo.com forums.  What an excellent resource.  Ive learned a bunch of things already.  I also got partnered with a guy from Russia for a sweat session tomorrow which Im looking forward to.
And Saturday Ill be playing in a home tournament (and hopefully cash game) with some casual players.  I should have an edge, but I really havent had too good of luck in the home games so far.  Im hoping for some good luck and Im going to try to play a little better than I have in the past with these games.

I can summarise July with the following 2 facts:
1. I lost $111.25 over 14,608 hands.
2. I moved up to 25NL lol!
Most of the loss was actually in 25NL. After a good start I had one single session where I lost $115 (ie all of my months losses) due to a combination of bad play and bad luck.
I feel comfortable with the decision to move up. I have made up most of that loss and feel like I am playing solidly. The decision was triggered by the Pokerstars offer of 40% bonus for depositing towards the end of July. My bankroll stands at $609, however I have a bankroll of $859 on the basis that in about another 13,000 hands, I will pick up my $100 bonus for the deposit, plus I will be able to cash in for another $100 using my FPP as I qualify to be a Silver VPP on Pokerstars. Then after about another 5,000 hands I can cash in for another $50 using FPP. The caveat to this of course is that I dont go bust in the next 13,000 hands!
Then hopefully it is on to $1,500 for the next move up!! Maybe. It might not happen, but I think over the next 2-3 months I will get to play ~50,000 hands and get an idea of whether I am a winning player at this level. Of course my experience with 10NL tells me that you probably need 100,000 hands to know that for sure.
I know I still have a lot to learn. One of the things I am grappling with at the moment is overplaying big pairs like top pair, good kicker, and overpairs. I showed the hand I lost with AA v a flopped two pair (which accounted for almost half my monthly loss!) Since then I have lost with AK a few times when I probably should have folded without a showdown. I am sure this is a leak and it can be a considerable one. I am now trying to think about each situation in a hand in terms of EV. For example, take the following hand from a session today:
PokerStars No-Limit Holdem, $0.25 BB (5 handed)
UTG ($25)
Hero ($28.85)
Button ($14.60)
SB ($15.25)
BB ($26.

Online Poker Compass Reviews

The Internet has got it all! From information to writetainment contented to affair and purchases of commodities, be it critical and elite army and food, name it, it can be found in the virtual world.

The most general license sport in the world, poker, can now be played through the Internet. therefore, we have what we call online poker.

Online poker is poker or license sport played with notebooks linked to the Internet. It is unsaid that online poker has spread, and dramatically in that sensation, improved the generality of poker worldwide.

orders background on poker

To better understand the features of online poker, it would help if you will know something about the license sports background and annals.

Poker is a category or class of license sport referred to as vying sport, where players shot to outpace or beat each other by advent out with the best likely combinations of licenses.

Historians dispute about the genuine source of poker. Linguistic scholars aver that the name poker factually descended from poque, a French word which in become came from a German word pochen, which means to crack.

But looking densely at the workings of poker, scholars say the license sport should have been resulting from the as nas sport in old Persia (now Iran). Studies insinuate that the Persian sailors in the 17th century had qualified the sport to French settlers in the US chaos of New Orleans.

From then on, a lot of modifications in the workings and way of live have been introduced. It would be careful to assert that like humanity, poker has evolved and online poker is just one form of evolution the sport has full over the decades.

Online poker vs. brick and mortar poker

Traditional of conventional venues for live poker are also, and more generally, known in the betting jargon as brick and mortar. Some players regularly play timid to play poker at the brick and mortar venues like nightclubs and poker quarters due to intimidation an geographic troubles.

some brick and mortar venues and operators are also initial to lift away because of cheap and token profit they can breed from the operations. You must sensation, how could this transpire when they rush so greatly for commissions or hunt. For your information, those rushs and fees do not commonly offset the overheads in operation or working an actual poker window.

Brick and mortar venues and nightclubs strategically outlive today from revenue breedd by slot equipment in their houses.

Online poker, in differ, are now more favorite by poker organizers because the sport entails cheaper overhead overheads. For case, adding one more online poker shelve will not take long and will not entail more window, different in brick and mortar.

Players regularly observe online poker as friendlier and more stretchy. Ecah player is prompted by a software when it is already his or her become to bewilder licenses. therefore, no one will be missed. Online poker is also more attractive for beginners because they can be permitted to play online poker even for greatly worse stakes, which can be as low as a separate cent!

Most of the online poker sites almost forever do not amass entry or registration fees. Can you write a poker window or nightclub lacking paying entry rushs? sweet economical and workable, huh?

Protection in online poker venues

Cheaters are everywhere and they will forever shot to do their affair in all the accessible venues and meapersuadeds. therefore, the online poker venues are appealing exciting and attractive sights and sites for them, too.

However, to stop fraud and agreement among online poker players, Internet sites and affaires that run these sites regularly mount defiant-agreement detection software and programs. This could not be likely in the brick and mortar nightclubs and poker quarters.

How does it work? Online poker operators or quarters do delay an online players Internet protocol (IP) address to make persuaded no two players are located at the same site or household. That would stop overlap. Players with open alternate servers are also stoped from live online poker on a separate or same poker shelve.

Online poker quarters also delay on an online players policy or play annals. This would make patterns of deeds or opinion detecshelve than in brick and mortar venues, where some players conspire by folding hands or having mystery signal languages.

therefore, it is recommendable that if you are where far from any known poker window or nightclub, log on to the Internet. A lot of sites present online poker sports, and you can desire whether you would want to play against genuine-time players located where in the ball or against notebook programs. The last would be a genuine challenge.

Pondering Poker

goody two-shoes of the world running poker?

PPA Statement on Kentucky Seizure of Poker Websites
WASHINGTON, DC. (September 23, 2008) – John Pappas, executive director of the Poker Players Alliance (PPA), the leading poker grassroots advocacy group with more than one million members nation-wide and more than 13,000 members in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, today issued the following statement in regards to legal action taken by the Commonwealth to seize the domain names of Internet gambling websites.
“The Poker Players Alliance is outraged at the actions taken by Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear and the Franklin County Circuit Court to seize the domain names of Internet gambling websites.  We believe this action not only unduly restricts the freedom of Kentucky residents to play games of skill, such as poker, online, but sets a precedent for censorship of the Internet by force.
“Many of Governor Beshear’s arguments – that online poker is illegal, unregulated and without a mechanism to capture tax revenue – are false. Online poker is not illegal under Kentucky law, is regulated in its home jurisdiction and the Commonwealth of Kentucky chose not to license and regulate poker websites.
“If the Governor truly wants to implement tighter regulations, taxation mechanisms and consumer protections on Internet gambling, the PPA suggests he publicly support federal legislation by U.S. House of Representatives Financial Services Chairman Barney Frank, H.R. 2460, which would achieve those goals
“Poker is a game of skill, a true American pastime and has a proud heritage in Kentucky. Simply because the game has evolved into the 21st Century, it should not be treated as suspect activity.  Forcefully and secretly seizing control of websites that offer online poker games is not a sound public policy or a sound legal solution.

Another BARGE … another madcap, wonderful time, punctuated by too much poker (that’s me at the tables), too little sleep, too much fun, friends I see all the time, friends I see once a year, and friends made anew as happens each and every year at BARGE.

For me, this BARGE had an additional challenge. It was production weekend for Poker Player Newspaper, so I had to get to bed at a reasonable hour in order to get up at 6 a.m. and edit the paper. I also had to go my room earlier at night than I’d really like to in order to do more editing.

Editing is a job I like, but editing a publication that comes out every two weeks is a relentless treadmill, and regardless of where you go, you have to make room to edit—and production weeks are more relentless than the weeks in between.

We’ve held BARGE at a few places other than Binion’s over the years, but when push comes to shove, there’s no place that gets us better than Binion’s. They are right in step with our sense of humor, our willingness to go far beyond what most poker rooms are willing to put up with, and each year dealers and floor personnel make their requests to work as many hours as they can during the BARGE weekend. Yes … It’s that much fun.

This might have been the largest BARGE yet. I’m not sure of the registration but I’m guessing there were close to 240 people attending. Downtown, for all its tawdriness, is the only place to hold an event like BARGE. We blend in there, and the location makes it easy to walk from place to place.

I drove there and did not move my car from the parking garage the entire weekend. My furthest trip was down the street to the Golden Gate, the oldest hotel in downtown Las Vegas, and an art deco wonder that has shrimp cocktails for a dollar apiece. But if you like the bigger, tastier shrimp as I do, you can get a huge cup full for about three bucks. I generally scarf down three or four at a time while I soak in the Golden Gate's unique vibe—the casino and café are somehow evocative of New Orleans, even down to the occasional ragtime piano player who pound s out tunes while you eat.

BARGE is always this time of year … the first weekend in August, but you have to register online to attend. If you mark your calendar and ping me sometime next June or early July—registration usually cuts off mid-July—I’ll give you all the registration details.

I’ll even guarantee that you’ll have more fun than you’ve ever had in a poker room. That’s a promise.

Daniel Negreanu Poker Blog Review

Considered by many as the original bible for poker players, Super System by Doyle Brunson is a necessary read for any poker player. At the time of it’s first publication, Super System revealed the ‘secrets’ of one of the most highly acclaimed poker players of all time. Brunson discussed theories that many professional poker players believed taboo for discussion, because the information contained within the book was too good. They thought that by teaching poorer poker players this valuable information, their livelihoods could be in jeopardy.
For today’s poker player—typically Texas Hold-em players, Super System may appear to be dated and half useless considering all the discussion on different poker games. However, that is where the average poker player and poor poker ‘learner’ is wrong. The discussion on the other games besides Hold-em is what was so intriguing to me. I am mainly a Hold-em player myself, however, I feel that to become the most complete player that I can, there is theories I need to learn from all forms of poker. Since I do not have the opportunity (and I will admit, the desire) to play the different games, the least I can do is learn about the background of each game to understand it a little better. I will never be proficient at 5 Card Draw or 7-2 Lowball, but I do understand the theory behind each game because of Super System.
The other aspect of the book that was very enjoyable to me was Brunson spends a fair amount of time on the history of the game, and specifically his life on getting to the level that he is at today. Great card stories abound as Texas Dolly takes you through the illegal days of poker to his spiritual and emotional decisions about becoming a professional gambler. Most poker players love a great card story, and there are fewer out there that have seen all that Brunson has. From the illegal days in Texas with Amirillo Slim, to the thieves he had to evade, to watching the game he loves growing to unforeseen levels. Super System tells the game of poker, but also gives the history of the ‘Grandfather’ to the game.
So my suggestion to all of those trying to learn the game, Super System had better be a well worn volume on your bookshelf. There may be better books about the specific game of Hold-em, but there are few books that has it all. As for all the pro’s that were upset with Brunson… Well, as we have now found out from the enormous amount of literature out there on the game—just because there are some fundamental and powerful tools written down and available to everyone, it takes more then the ability to read for someone to actually use the information. There are fish out there—even well read ones.

I explained to her that the return was only better if you played the correct strategy for the game. Each variation of video poker has its own unique strategy that will give you the highest return. If you sit down and play by hunch, video poker can be a worse game to play than the slot machines. Luckily you can use a video poker strategy chart while you play to help you make the correct decisions. She asked where she could get one and I told her I had a few of them on this site and gave her my card. If you are looking for a video poker strategy chart for some of the more popular games you can find them here and also download a pdf to take with you to the casino.

MacPokerTools Poker Podcast List

Thanks for all the responses for poker tips. I received loads of tips completely running the gamut. Please keep them coming as we can make this a great resource.

MacPokerTools Poker Tips:

Poker is a mind game. Play only when you are fresh and alert. Keeping the proper frame of mind will be the best thing you can do for your game.

You cannot win every game you play. Poker is a game that is measured over the long haul. Don't let a few bad days ruin you. Remember it happens to all of us. It only takes a few hours to wipe out months of patience and hard work.

Practice at, and play the various other poker games. Don't just play one type of game. Go ahead and try some 7 card stud or Omaha. This will help round out your overall knowledge of the games, while keeping things fresh and interesting. Experience will teach you more than anything, get out there and play.

Don't play in games that are above your skill level. If you are in over your head, just leave.

Take notes on the other players, especially pay attention to and notate the weaker players. Add them to your buddy list, it makes finding them much easier. It is a good idea to notate how each player plays as well. Come up with a system of notes or use the sites note option. Keep track if you notice someone playing Tight and Passive or Loose and Aggressive, or whatever trend you detect. If you notice a player who tends to fold to a reraise, or the aggressive player who likes to push when someone flat calls or checks. Write it down, it will only help in the future.

Turn on your sound. This sounds strange, but the psychological ramifications of being able to hear the bets cannot be overlooked.

Play with a four color deck if possible. It will be much harder to mistake your opponents flush draw when you are getting tired.

Spend time just watching games. Try to guess what every player has. Practicing this can do wonders for your game.

Know how to calculate your pot odds! This will help you online as well as in the casino. Every poker player who wants to win over the long haul needs to know this.

Table selection is extremely important in being a winning player. Most online poker rooms display table statistics in their lobby. These stats will show the average size of the pot, as well as the percentage of players seeing the flop. This free information is invaluable in selecting a profitable table. At low to mid limit poker tables you should look for tables with the highest average pot and the most players per flop. Thats usually is a good sign there are some wild players and some good action. With the higher limits, bad players are harder to come by. Open up a few tables at your limit and really scope out the action. See if you can find a player on tilt, or some below average players who are just looking to pay someone off. When joining ring games, wait for the Big Blind to come around to you. Be patient and watch the other players play before putting your money in.

Don't Bluff the short stacked players. Short stacks have little to lose and are eager to double up. They cant wait for premium hands like the larger stacks, forcing them to gamble more often with marginal hands. You can use this to your advantage by raising somewhat marginal hands preflop, but only when you feel comfortable calling an all in.

Read Poker books. If you are playing in tournaments, the Harrington on Hold’em series has to be part of your poker book collection. Each book contains easy to read and well diagrammed concepts helping you to understand his excellent strategy on winning No-Limit tournaments. All the Sklansky and Malmuth books from 2+2 are sure winners. For playing in your home game or at the local casino, Joe Navarro's book Read 'em and Reap, is a fun read with lots of great pointers on reading and deciphering your opponents tells.

Join a Poker Forum. There is tons of information, and people willing to help you with whatever you might need. Here is a list of some of the better sites mentioned.
