I have voted already. Last Thursday when I got up in the morning I got in my car, drove to the Board of Elections and voted. Voting early provides many benefits to busy students like me. The option of voting early is beneficial for people with busy Tuesdays who do not have a lot of extra time to go vote, impatient people who do not want to wait in long lines or people that do not want to brave bad weather, which is likely on a November day in Ohio.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Depending on who's doing the talking - or whose ads are currently on your television - three state ballot issues would either create jobs or leave even more Ohioans without work. Voters on Nov. 4 will decide whether to allow casino gambling and whether the state should finance conservation of natural open spaces and the environmental revitalization of other lands.

This time last year, most experts didn’t even have them making the playoffs, but after an Eastern Conference championship and a plethora of youth, the Montreal Canadians are one of the favorites to contend for Lord Stanley.
It’s been 15 years since Les Habitant have hoisted what is arguably the most difficult prize in all sports, but with the additions of Alex Tanguay, Robert Lang, Georges Laraque and the ever improving youth in the Canadians locker room, the question on everyone’s mind is; are these guys for real?
Alex Tanguay has been regarded as one of the best left wingers in the entire NHL, but after a disappointing 07/08 season in Calgary, he is looking to rebound in the city where he grew up. With four 70+ point seasons, there is no question that Tanguay has the capabilities to be an impact player.
Bob Gainey made some headlines with the late summer signing of Robert Lang from the Blackhawks. A former line-mate of Montreal star Alex Kovalev, where they both enjoyed some of their most productive seasons. Lang brings experience and depth to the Canadians lineup.
George Laraque is arguably the toughest player in the league, and gives Montreal that much needed fourth-line enforcer. Another native of Montreal, Laraque comes to the Canadians after a run to the finals with the Penguins last season. He does have the ability to score a few goals, but his main role will be protecting the skilled forwards.
Bob Gainey has showed the dedicated fans that he is serious about this team, and the rebuilding years are over. The Canadians now have 3 solid scoring lines, and are backed by the impressive Carey Price.  Whatever happens this season, these are exciting times for the city of Montreal, and I think we can all say: Yes they are for real.

So, I’ve been getting the vaccine against influenza for the last few years and as I had previously written it was usually Vaxigrip. I’m supposed to get it (paid for 100% by the employer) on Monday morning, but the thing is I’ve been battling a nasty cold and/or flu with a throat infection accompanied by fever and aches for the last 6 days.
I wonder if you can get the flu vaccine if you’re already sick. I know from previous years that it makes you feel slightly flu-like for 2-3 days afterwards. which is supposedly normal, since they are in essence injecting you with a variant of the influenza virus itself (what the ??)
Anyhow, I suppose the nurse on Monday will be the one who decides hopefully I’ll be better off and not so feverish by then. Having cold fingertips is a weird sensation.

The signing of Marian Hossa brings the current Wings salary to just under $53 million, which leaves $4M under the salary cap. For the Wings, that's fine, because the Wings management has liked to keep about $2M under the cap for emergency during-the-season purposes.

The biggest priorities going into the 2008-09 season will be Valtteri Filppula, Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen. Filppula is a restricted free agent and both Zetterberg's and Franzen's contracts expire at the end of this season. With Zetterberg making "only" $2.9M, he's going to be due for a hefty raise in his next contract. After all, if Pavel Datsyuk was locked up for 7 years at about $6.7M/year, it stands to reason that Z is due for something similar.

Chris Chelios, Darren McCarty, Aaron Downey, Dallas Drake, and Mark Hartigan are the UFAs of note. GM Ken Holland was quoted as saying that an offer is in the works for McCarty, Chelios claims that a deal is already pretty much done, and Drake is pondering retirement. Hartigan is likely gone, what with rookie Darren Helm having proven his worth (but Hartigan was only at just over a half-mil, so that's not a significant savings there).

Current RFAs are Filppula, defensemen Kyle Quincey and Jonathan Ericsson. The minimum offer sheet the Wings can offer are a 5% raise for Filppula, and 10% raises for Quincey and Ericsson. That'd be $892,500 for Fil, $588,500 for Quincey and $522,500 for Ericsson. Hardly a significant hit to the salary cap, really. But unfortunately, that means other teams can afford to poach one or all three and if the Wings want to keep them, they'd have to match.

Compensatory draft picks wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, however, if the Wings opt not to match any offer sheets.

After 2008-09, the following players become free agents:

Marian Hossa
Henrik Zetterberg
Mikael Samuelsson
Johan Franzen
Tomas Kopecky
Jiri Hudler (restricted free agents)

This will be Kopecky's year to prove himself in the line-up, and he'll definitely have competition for ice time. I suspect that Samuelsson will be allowed to walk no matter what happens this year because comparing his numbers to the prospects in the system just don't justify any salary or long-term commitment over $1M.

Detroit is stacked on defense, so every player beyond the top 4 will be competing for roster spots. That group includes Andreas Lilja (signed through 2009-10 at $1.25M), Brett Lebda (signed through 2009-10 at $850K), Derek Meech (signed through 2009-10 at $500K), Chelios, Ericsson, and Quincey.

Dominik Hasek's retirement has given the Wings a small comfort zone under the cap. In 2007-08, Detroit had committed $3.7M in salary for the goalies, but 2008-09 looks to be $3.3M with the signing of Ty Conklin and if Jimmy Howard is tendered the minimum qualifying offer.

So this coming season won't be too much of a problem. McCarty will probably be offered a 1 or 2 year deal at around $600-700K which might leave Downey looking for another team again (a damn shame because I've read that Downey is the ultimate cheerleader in the locker room and was just simply happy to be a part of the team, regardless of whether he got any significant ice time or not). Drake is probable to retire.

For the upcoming season, the forward lines could look something like:

Datsyuk, Hossa, Holmstrom
Zetterberg, Filppula, Franzen (with maybe Samuelsson)
Hudler, Helm, McCarty (Kopecky)
Draper, Maltby, Cleary

Defense:

Lidstrom-Rafalski
Kronwall-Stuart
Lebda-Lilja

(Chelios, Meech)

Ericsson can still be sent down to Grand Rapids without penalty, but I don't know where Quincey stands.

With five weeks left until the election, it's amazing to think about how far we have come in this campaign. Your overwhelming support convinced me to get back in the race, and the strength of our campaign has grown in the last seven months. We still have five weeks to go, but this race is ours to lose, if we work for it. In 35 days, we have a chance to change the way things are done in Washington.

Tonight at midnight, we face an important fundraising deadline. With your generous contribution we can demonstrate clearly and effectively the strength of our campaign. We can stay on the air through Election Day and reach every single voter in this district. Make a contribution of $10, $25, $50, or $100 by midnight tonight, and together we will bring change to Washington.
Tonight from 5:30-7:30 at our campaign headquarters at 90th Center, we will have a "Big Tent Event" fundraiser. Everyone is invited and all contributions are welcome. Bring your friends and family and help kick off the final five weeks of the election.
With only five weeks left until Election Day, every day counts. Make a contribution by midnight tonight to keep us on the road to victory.

In the end, little of this made sense. The figures didn't compute, the synapses didn't fire - whatever, pick a metaphor, they all fit. Even some of the players didn't get it. A coach who has won twice in 22 Big East games getting complacent? The same coach saying that trying to gain a yard was "desperate?" A running back who had almost 100 yards in the first half carrying the ball six times in the second? A defense that saw the game slipping away, ground down by the opponent's ground game, but still not blitzing? None of it made sense in Syracuse's 34-24 loss to Pittsburgh, a sad end to a day that had started with such a promise.

Ra was a logophile — words were another form of music, which was the ultimate artform — and he loved homonyms just about as much as he loved tangy, dissonant harmonies, aggregations of low horns, and parallel unison. Homonymity is why he called his group the Arkestra — on one hand, he slipped in a Biblical reference to the Ark, but on the other hand, Ra always explained that where he came from, in Alabama, thats how you said the word Orchestra.

Sorry, no pictures...but I promise that this is interesting and worth reading.

Recently, I took one giant stride towards "acting like an adult" when I decided to move in with my girlfriend Shellie. More accurately, we decided to move in with each other. But she isn't moving in at my place, and I'm not moving in at hers; instead, we are getting a "new" place together.

I am both excited and overwhelmed. So much to do...so little time to do extracurricular stuff, like update Puck Junk with new articles.

My planned move day is this Saturday. In the interim, I have been slowly moving things to the new place, which is conveniently 1/2 block away from my current place of residence.

I have been a man of many hobbies, from collecting GI Joe and Star Wars figures, to collecting vintage Transformers--including rare Japanese imports. And, let us not forget hockey cards and collectibles. Right now, hockey seems to be my "big thing". I've never gotten tired of collecting hockey cards...but there have been years when I have taken a break from it. Eight years ago, I was really into Transformers. Four years ago, my number one hobby was GI Joe action figures (from the 1980s to present).

In the past few years, I have sold off much of my toy collection. Many times, I'd ask myself "Why did I buy this?" As in, "Why did I buy these bootleg Transformers toys?" Or, "Why did I buy four of this particular GI Joe figure?". Or "Why the hell did I decide to start collecting Captain Power, Ronin Warriors, etc. etc?"

However, I have never regretted purchasing a hockey card. Sure, I've sold or traded cards, but only my doubles, or to get cards I really wanted. My Pro Set cards from 1990-91 are as meaningful to me now as they were back in 1990-91.

So, I've decided to concentrate most of my collecting efforts on hockey cards. There is just so much variety, so much history...so much undiscovered cool stuff out there, that I feel that this is a hobby I'll never bore of. After all, it has been almost two decades.

Back to my move. One of the bedrooms in this new apartment will be for my stuff--a haven for Sal, and where no dogs shall roam (my girlfriend has three basset hounds--good dogs, but old cards do smell like gum, and dogs like to chew on things). One of my big plans for this room is to "consolidate the collection". I have a lot of binders full of complete hockey sets--some of them are here, but most are at my Grandma's house. Once I am settled in, I am going to purchase some tall bookshelves to store and showcase my card collection. I've wanted to do this for a long time, and I am excited that I finally can.

I'm also going to frame and hang many of the autographed photos I've acquired throughout the years, including Denis Savard, Patrick Roy, Doug Wilson, Gump Worsley, Guy Lafleur, Marcel Dionne, Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Al MacInnis.

My goal is for this room to look cool--but not too cluttered.

So, I won't be updating this site for at least a week. I won't have internet access at my new place until at least the middle of next week. Until then, I'll be unpacking, building shelves, and doing the other two hundred things that need doing when you move to a new place.

BC beat UCF 34-7 last Saturday, but the score was very deceiving. It was not nearly as close as it appeared, as BC trailed at the half and led by only 10 points going into the fourth quarter. However, BC was able to utilize its talent to finally pull away at the end.

Offense: C-

BC's offensive display in the first half was the worst the Bitter Eagle has ever seen. Chris Crane looked like a Pop Warner QB, as he could not connect on any passes at all, unless they were to the other team. Crane's decision making was horrible as he consistently threw into double and triple coverage. He also threw up numerous off balance passes and did not know when to tuck the ball and run. His passes were once again inaccurate. He constantly overthrew receivers or threw behind them, leading UCF to get their hands on a lot of errant passes. If UCF could have converted these errant passes into turnovers, UCF would have won easily. In the second half Crane did play better, however his passing was still excruciatingly horrible. That screen pass attempt in the third quarter was the worst the Bitter Eagle has ever seen and his third interception was also bad. Crane performed better in the second half because he used his feet much more. Crane looks like he can be a weapon if he uses his feet more becuase it gets the defense off balance and opens up the passing lanes. Hopefully, Logan will adjust like he did in the second half and give Crane more running plays.

As for Dominique Davis, he performed decently in his first collegiate game. His option timing and decision making looked off as it should be, given that he has not worked much with the first team offense. However, his passing looked more crisp than Crane's. Granted, Davis had some bad passes, however he showed that he is much more accurate than Crane and it even looked like he had a better arm on a few passes. Davis looked like he could pass downfield better than Crane can. Davis looked esp. good on his TD pass on a rollout to the right. Davis will excel on these types of plays because everyone has to respect both his ability to pass and his ability to run. This dual-threat will give opposing defenses fits.

Finally, for the running game, Montel Harris emerged as the best current BC RB. He possesses the skills that neither Haden, nor Smith possess. Further, he is multi-dimensional; he can run it both outside and inside effectively, where Haden and Smith cannot. Harris is shifty enough to make people miss, he runs powerfully, and he has a nice burst of speed at the end. Harris looks like he will be a crucial component of the BC offense the rest of the way.

Defense: A-

The defense played lights out again, shutting down the UCF offense for most of the game. It held UCF to only 7 points even though the BC offense put it into precarious situations a lot due to its three turnovers. The defense also held the UCF offense to only 252 total yards which is very impressive. BC did have a couple of lapses though on defense as it still let UCF convert a few third and long situations. The worst play has to be the 44 yard run on a third and long situation in the first half that led to UCF's only TD of the game. As the Bitter Eagle has constantly pleaded, Spaz needs to let his defense loose in these situations so it can remain aggressive.

Special Teams: F

The special teams was the worst aspect of the team Saturday. Apon missed another chip-shot gimme from only 24 yards out when he clanked it off the uprights. Apon has consistently shown that he is an erratic kicker, that basically has no leg. Bennett, on the other hand, has shown that he has a much more powerful leg as he usually kicks the ball very deep on kickoffs. Now is the time to make the switch Jags. Apon basically blew the game against GT and there is no doubt that he will cost BC even more games later down the road. As for the punting, Quigley started out well on his first two punts, then went downhill fast. His two shanks were brutal and put the defense in a tough situation. Now we all know why Flutie was punting against GT. BC really needs to figure this punting situation out before it gets too late. The only glimmer of success in BC's special teams unit was Smith's kick return to start the second half. This return ignited a fire into the entire team, which used it to pull away.

Coaching: C

Logan's play calling in the first half was horrible because it consisted of too many pass plays. BC should have let Harris run the ball down UCF's throat. Logan finally made some adjustments in the second half and called more plays in which Crane could showcase his speed. The spread options, QB draws, and QB plunges cut Crane's decision making drastically and instilled into him the needed confidence to succeed that he sorely lacked in the first half. Crane was finally able to step up as a leader and lead his team on some nice scoring drives. On the other hand, Jags needs to make some adjustments of his own. He should start by benching Apon and playing Bennett. If Bennett does not kick this year, it will have been a waste of 2 years of his eligibility already. Not a very efficient way of using a kid's eligibility in the Bitter Eagle's opinion. Finally, Spaz will be Spaz, and his defense will never be aggressive on third down.

Overall: C

It was a nice win over a subpar team. BC's offense looks like it has managed to pull itself out of a rut and finally get back onto track. BC's defense is as dominant as ever. However, the special teams unit is a source of worrying. It will need to get 10 times better and fast.

Next Game: A

BC should destroy Rhode Island just because of the huge talent gap. BC does not need to click on all cylinders in order to win comfortably. It just cannot play a sloppy game or it might turn into a UMass game of last year. Good thing that Rhode Island is not nearly as good as UMass. In fact, it went 3-8 last year and has not had a winning season since 2001. Oh yeah, did the Bitter Eagle mention that URI is a D1AA (or whatever new term the NCAA came up with last year)? BC needs to win Saturday and win big.
