An Exhibit of Items from the Roxcy Bolton Papers at the State Archives of Florida
Roxcy Bolton’s struggles for women’s rights included campaigning for passage of the Equal Rights Amendment, pioneering enlightened treatment of rape victims, opening department store lunchrooms to women, denouncing abusive or derogatory treatment of women, and working with national women’s rights movement figures such as Betty Friedan.
This exhibit of items from the Roxcy Bolton Papers collection at the State Archives of Florida highlights just a few of Roxcy Bolton’s activities and achievements from over 50 years of concern and activism.

Biography and Notes: My last blogpost featured a quote from Harvard Law Professor Randall Kennedy that is critical of what he perceives as an anxiety of authenticity on the part of Black Harvard Law School students and alums. In the featured quote (from Kennedys Sellout, his most recent book), he links this apparent fear of being not Black enough/not connected to community enough/forgetting where you came from to the writings and speeches of Charles Hamilton Houston.
Professor Kennedy is especially interested in those instances when the pressure among Black professionals to remember where you came from and stay black becomes the basis for ostracizing those African Americans whose interests and ideas fall outside of the range of activities and concerns that one might consider to be acceptably Black. This is relatively recent phenomenon (which really gained momentum during the late 1960s) and it represents a misreading and misuse of Houstons ideas.
Charles Hamilton Houstons life is a testament to the power that an African American attorney can have when he or she commits himself to social change in and for the Black community.
Born in 1895, Houston was the valedictorian of his graduating class at Amherst College (his was one of six valedictorians for the class of 1915). A cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School, a former Dean of the Howard University Law School, and a history-making civil rights lawyer, he believed deeply in the need for and the responsibility of African American lawyers to aid Black communities in dismantling Jim Crow segregation and the local and regional obstacles that it placed in the path to freedom.
Houston entered Harvard Law school in 1919, after serving as an Army officer in World War I. At Harvard he became the first Black editor of the law review. He graduated in the top five percent of his class, earning his LL.B. with honors. He continued his legal studies at the University of Madrid and went on to earn his J.D.
Houston joined the faculty of the Howard University Law School in 1924.

Upsets in college football are very exciting. Unfortunately, in the long run, they are detrimental to the sport. They are akin to winning a large sum of money and using the windfall to buy a plasma television instead of saving it for the future. Number one ranked USC losing to Oregon State or number four ranked Florida losing to Ole Miss may have been enjoyable to watch but the experience will quickly be forgotten. However, USC or Florida finishing the season undefeated and achieving historical significance will be an experience to last a lifetime.
In 2007, seven teams ranked number one or number two lost. This trend is already continuing in 2008, where this past week alone seven teams ranked in the top 25 lost. The days of once-in-a-lifetime teams like Barry Switzer’s Oklahoma, Bear Bryant’s Alabama or Tom Osborne’s Nebraska are over. Thats a shame because instead of watching history, you’re watching mediocrity. Every college football season should have a dominate team that can stand up to the test of time. Not a slew of teams limping through conference play losing to inferior and irrelevant opponents.
Now, you should never complain about a problem unless you have a solution. The solution to fix this problem is: 1) regulate scholarships for non-BCS schools; 2) limit the amount of televised games for non-BCS conferences; and 3), this is the most important, prohibit the use of the spread formation which is ruining college football. The spread formation is the great equalizer but college football doesn’t need equalization. It’s needs domination.
Rules need to change to eliminate the rash of upsets that blight college football. What is best for college football is not the underdog, but a traditional powerhouse going undefeated, preferably with an average margin of victory around 20 points and a Heisman trophy candidate in the backfield. A team for the ages is always better than an upset right now.

2. Under no circumstances will we play for a smaller admission price than twenty-five cents. This must be paid by every one, both men and women. If a game is worth seeing it is worth paying for.
3. We positively will not admit free of charge the relatives of friends of ball players, managers, magnates, stockholders or officers. We are not running a charitable institution.
4. We positively will not admit at any stage of the game children who are unaccompanied by their parents. Children must be pretty small to get by our ticket taker.
7. We carry our own tickets for both gate and grandstand. We sell and you take. When you are ready to settle count the tickets you have taken in, figure your share of the receipts and we pay you instantly.
8. We always reserve the right to use two umpires, one of whom will be furnished by us.
10. We are willing to furnish you all the free advertising matter you can use to advantage. But don't expect us to pay for putting it up. You ought to have enough to look after that yourself.
11. Settlement must be made for each game as it is played. We positively will not wait until the end of the series.

UWM Volleyball Coach Susie Johnson
Bud has played a very critical role for me, personally. I have been here 13 years and a lot of that has to do with Bud. He gave me an opportunity to be an assistant coach and then saw my development to become a head coach and he didnt waver at all as soon as the opportunity came. He made me feel like I could do it, he gave me confidence and hired me as the head coach here. I am very grateful to him and I think he has done a great job with the transition into division one. It is really hard to believe that we have only been D-I 20 years with all of the championships and all of the NCAA Tournaments, so he clearly has done a great job hiring good people all-around and making them comfortable and keeping them here.
UWM Mens Soccer Coach Jon Coleman
He has shown a lot of leadership since I was a player here in 1993. The soccer program has grown by leaps and bounds and he has helped guide the way. At the same time, I think he has created an environment for success and its great he has been able to hire some significant and quality people Brian Tompkins and Louis Bennett within the soccer program to be associated with those types of people and I am glad that he gave me the opportunity. We wish him all the best for whatever the future holds. He leaves a legacy and he has taught me a lot and has been very helpful and influential in the programs success, my success and the success of UWM as a whole.
UWM Baseball Coach Scott Doffek
I think the baseball program is a microcosm of his whole career here. We started from zero we werent even a division one program when he got here. And myself, along with (former UWM baseball coach) Jerry Augustine who started in 1995 slowly grew the program under Buds leadership. I think we are at the point now where we are a healthy division one program and a lot of that has to do with Buds impact.

For those who still cant grasp the concept of white privilege, or who are constantly looking for some easy-to-understand examples of it, perhaps this list will help.
White privilege is when you can get pregnant at seventeen like Bristol Palin and everyone is quick to insist that your life and that of your family is a personal matter, and that no one has a right to judge you or your parents, because every family has challenges, even as black and Latino families with similar are regularly typified as irresponsible, pathological and arbiters of social decay.
White privilege is when you can call yourself a redneck, like Bristol Palins boyfriend does, and talk about how if anyone messes with you, you'll kick their fuckin' ass, and talk about how you like to shoot shit for fun, and still be viewed as a responsible, all-American boy (and a great son-in-law to be) rather than a thug.
White privilege is when you can attend four different colleges in six years like Sarah Palin did (one of which you basically failed out of, then returned to after making up some coursework at a community college), and no one questions your intelligence or commitment to achievement, whereas a person of color who did this would be viewed as unfit for college, and probably someone who only got in in the first place because of affirmative action.
White privilege is when you can claim that being mayor of a town smaller than most medium-sized colleges, and then Governor of a state with about the same number of people as the lower fifth of the island of Manhattan, makes you ready to potentially be president, and people dont all piss on themselves with laughter, while being a black U.S. Senator, two-term state Senator, and constitutional law scholar, means youre
White privilege is being able to say that you support the words under God in the pledge of allegiance because if it was good enough for the founding fathers, its good enough for me, and not be immediately disqualified from holding office--since, after all, the pledge was written in the late 1800s and the under God part wasnt added until the 1950s--while believing that reading accused criminals and terrorists their rights (because, ya know, the Constitution, which you used to teach at a prestigious law school requires it), is a dangerous and silly idea only supported by mushy liberals.
White privilege is being able to be a gun enthusiast and not make people immediately scared of you.
White privilege is being able to have a husband who was a member of an extremist political party that wants your state to secede from the Union, and whose motto was Alaska first, and no one questions your patriotism or that of your family, while if you're black and your spouse merely fails to come to a 9/11 memorial so she can be home with her kids on the first day of school, people immediately think shes being disrespectful.
White privilege is being able to make fun of community organizers and the work they do--like, among other things, fight for the right of women to vote, or for civil rights, or the 8-hour workday, or an end to child labor--and people think youre being pithy and tough, but if you merely question the experience of a small town mayor and 18-month governor with no foreign policy expertise beyond a class she took in college--youre somehow being mean, or even sexist.
White privilege is being able to convince white women who dont even agree with you on any substantive issue to vote for you and your running mate anyway, because all of a sudden your presence on the ticket has inspired confidence in these same white women, and made them give your party a second look.
White privilege is being able to fire people who didnt support your political campaigns and not be accused of abusing your power or being a typical politician who engages in favoritism, while being black and merely knowing some folks from the old-line political machines in Chicago means you must be corrupt.
White privilege is being able to attend churches over the years whose pastors say that people who voted for John Kerry or merely criticize George W. Bush are going to hell, and that the U.S. is an explicitly Christian nation and the job of Christians is to bring Christian theological principles into government, and who bring in speakers who say the conflict in the Middle East is Gods punishment on Jews for rejecting Jesus, and everyone can still think youre just a good church-going Christian, but if youre black and friends with a black pastor who has noted (as have Colin Powell and the U.S. Department of Defense) that terrorist attacks are often the result of U.S. foreign policy and who talks about the history of racism and its effect on black people, youre an extremist who probably hates America.
White privilege is not knowing what the Bush Doctrine is when asked by a reporter, and then people get angry at the reporter for asking you such a trick question, while being black and merely refusing to give one-word answers to the queries of Bill OReilly means youre dodging the question, or trying to seem overly intellectual and nuanced.
[Editor's Note: Black privilege is being able to say "the N-word" with reckless abandon, telling "white folks are sooo..." jokes on Comic View, and.... and.... uhmmm, that's about it.]
White privilege is being able to claim your experience as a POW has anything at all to do with your fitness for president, while being black and experiencing racism is, as Sarah Palin has referred to it a burden.
And finally, white privilege is the only thing that could possibly allow someone to become president when he has voted with George W. Bush 90 percent of the time, even as unemployment is skyrocketing, people are losing their homes, inflation is rising, and the U.S. is increasingly isolated from world opinion, just because white voters arent sure about that whole thing. Ya know, its just too vague and ill-defined, unlike, say, four more years of the same, which is very concrete and certain
White privilege is, in short, the problem.

Logans Run Rule
RPG characters are young. Very young. The average age seems to be 15, unless the character is a decorated and battle-hardened soldier, in which case he might even be as old as 18. Such teenagers often have skills with multiple weapons and magic, years of experience, and never ever worry about their parents telling them to come home from adventuring before bedtime. By contrast, characters more than twenty-two years old will cheerfully refer to themselves as washed-up old fogies and be eager to make room for the younger generation.
Single Parent Rule
RPG characters with two living parents are almost unheard of. As a general rule, male characters will only have a mother, and female characters will only have a father. The missing parent either vanished mysteriously and traumatically several years ago or is never referred to at all. Frequently the main characters surviving parent will also meet an awkward end just after the story begins, thus freeing him of inconvenient filial obligations.
Some Call Me Tim?
Good guys will only have first names, and bad guys will only have last names. Any bad guy who only has a first name will become a good guy at some point in the game. Good guys last names may be mentioned in the manual but they will never be referred to in the story.
Nominal Rule
Any character who actually has a name is important in some way and must be sought out. However, if you are referred to as a part of a posessive noun (s Mom) then you are superfluous.
The Compulsories
Theres always a fire dungeon, an ice dungeon, a sewer maze, a misty forest, a derelict ghost ship, a mine, a glowing crystal maze, an ancient temple full of traps, a magic floating castle, and a technological dungeon.
Luddite Rule (or, George Lucas Rule)
Speaking of which, technology is inherently evil and is the exclusive province of the Bad Guys. Theyre the ones with the robots, factories, cyberpunk megalopolises and floating battle stations, while the Good Guys live in small villages in peaceful harmony with nature. (Although somehow your guns and/or heavily armed airships are exempted from this.)
Lets Start From The Very Beginning (Yuna Rule)
Whenever there is a sequel to an RPG that features the same main character as the previous game, that character will always start with beginner skills. Everything that they learned in the previous game will be gone, as will all their ultra-powerful weapons and equipment.
Poor Little Rich Hero (Meis Rule)
If the hero comes from a rich and powerful family, it will have fallen on hard times and be broke and destitute by the time the game actually starts.
The Higher The Hair, The Closer To God (Cloud Rule)
The more outrageous his hairstyle, the more important a male character is to the story.
Garretts Principle
Lets not mince words: youre a thief. You can walk into just about anybodys house like the door wasnt even locked. You just barge right in and start looking for stuff. Anything you can find thats not nailed down is yours to keep. You will often walk into perfect strangers houses, lift their precious artifacts, and then chat with them like you were old neighbors as you head back out with their family heirlooms under your arm. Unfortunately, this never works in stores.

Thankfully, Oregon has done the smart thing and moved the Pac-10 meet to Friday, which also happens to be Halloween.
Unless you've got an attachment to the Pilots (who always win the WCC meet) or Vikings, the marquee events will be in Lane County.

EUGENE, Ore. - The date of the 2008 Pacific-10 Conference Cross Country Championships has been moved to Friday, Oct. 31 at Springfield Country Club. The women's race will begin at 2:15 p.m., while the men will start at 3:15 p.m.
The 2008 championships, which are being hosted by the University of Oregon, were initially scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 1. The date of the championships was changed in order to accommodate fans who would like to attend both the OSAA cross country state high school championships, which are being contested Nov. 1 at Lane Community College, and the Pac-10 Championships.
"We know have a large fan base that would like to be able to attend both the Pac-10 Championships and the state high school meet, which is already a well-established and successful event," said Associate Athletic Director Vin Lananna. "This move will help the University of Oregon provide a championship atmosphere for the Pac-10 student-athletes and will also benefit countless fans who can now plan on seeing two terrific running events here in Eugene and Springfield."
The Oregon men are the defending NCAA Champions and have won the last two Pac-10 Championships. The UO women were second at both the Pac-10 and NCAA Championships in 2007. The men return their top seven runners from last season, while the women have six of their top seven back for 2008.
