The US crackdown on internet gambling has created a large and potentially lucrative loophole for fantasy sports leagues, a new report suggests. The study raises further questions about the controversial ban as efforts mount in Washington, D.C., to repeal or amend the sweeping prohibition.
The National Football League and other professional sports leagues were aggressive backers of the 2006 federal ban on internet gambling, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. The politically-influential leagues have campaigned aggressively against on-line sports betting, fearing scandals that could drag in players and cast a cloud over the integrity of their games.
But while the new law took aim at a wide variety of online gambling activity, it carved out a specific exemption for fantasy sports leagues, argues Joseph Kelly, co-editor in chief of the Gaming Law Review and Economics and a professor of business law at SUNY College Buffalo in New York.
Such fantasy sports leagues have been a boon for the professional leagues, further increasing fan interest in their teams and games. There are now more than 27 million players in the United States with one third playing baseball, and annual revenue is in the range of $800m to $1bn, according to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association.
However, that loophole has unwittingly opened the door to a fast-growing, and so far, legal form of online gambling; one which appears poised to stretch the original intent of the exemption for fantasy sports under the two-year-old internet gambling ban, Kelly warns.
Such concerns come as Congress weighs whether to suspend the increasingly unpopular 2006 internet crackdown. Democratic US Representative Barney Frank, chairman of the powerful House Financial Services Committee, succeeded in pushing through his committee a bill that would have suspended the enforcement of the federal internet gambling ban, though it would preserve the ban on online sports betting.
While an amendment that allows horse tracks to offer on-line wagering generated controversy, the iron-clad exemption for fantasy sports leagues surprisingly generated little press attention, Kelly observes in his article, “Living in a Fantasy”.
“You have some very clever entrepreneurs who could take fantasy sports and define it in such a way that the game will not have any relationship with fantasy sports,” Kelly said in an interview with GamblingCompliance.
In fact, that trend may be already starting to happen, notes Kelly, in his recent Gaming Law Review report. Originally founded by small groups of statistic-crazed baseball fanatics, fantasy sports leagues have been extended to bowling, darts, celebrity leagues and even ‘fantasy Congress’ leagues. “But that trend is likely to move in directions that will push the envelope each further, to the point where the very definition of what is a sport is called into question,” he argues.
Meanwhile, fantasy leagues are increasingly looking like a form of online gambling. Players ante up a fee to play in a tournament, and then compete for a prize or prizes. And those prizes are getting more lucrative as well. Fantasy Fishing Awards, Kelly notes, is “offering a $1m grand prize and 4,000 other prizes in its online game.”
Station Casinos, in turn, which operates the fifth largest sports book, is accepting “wagers based on players’ projected fantasy statistics”, Kelly reports. Some entry fees may be as high as $1,500. More typical is one fantasy baseball league, which charges $29.95 to enter and offers a grand prize of $10,000.
“The entrance fee and the winning of prizes could be considered a bet and therefore be possible illegal gambling,” Kelly writes.
Still, if the coast is clear on the federal level, there are still some potential roadblocks on the state level for would-be online gambling operators, according to Kelly. While the exemption for fantasy sports protects it from federal prosecution under the 2006 internet gambling law, it leaves it up to the states to decide whether to write regulations that would officially legalize fantasy sports.
So far, only Montana has taken this step, but it has also capped profits at 15 percent, effectively discouraging any would-be fantasy sports operators. However, in written opinions, attorney generals in three different states – Florida, Arizona and Louisiana - have concluded fantasy sports are illegal, Kelly writes.
“Attorney general opinions are not law, but they are viewed often by courts as persuasive authority,” Kelly writes.
That said, it is highly unlikely there will any state crackdowns on fantasy sports clubs. For politically savvy district attorneys and attorney generals, there is nothing to be gained – and much to be lost – by going after sports fans. “Some of the biggest names are conducting fantasy sports leagues. I can’t imagine a law enforcement person wanting to get into this,” Kelly said.
By contrast, there have been a few private suits against fantasy sports companies on behalf of individuals who lost money in tournaments run by the firms. So far, none of these suits have been successful.
Nor is there likely to be any action by the major sports leagues, whose main concern is barring online sports betting out of concern it could damage the integrity of their games, said Andrew Zimbalist, an economist at Smith College and one of the nation’s top sports business experts.
“It just increases their following and the intensity of the fan base tremendously,” Zimbalist said. “They certainly don’t want to squelch that activity. It’s low-grade gambling.

Pinehurst ~ Home of American Golf
In celebration of the 100-year anniversary of the venerable Pinehurst No. 2 course comes the release of the definitive history of North Carolina Sandhills golf, Pinehurst ~ Home of American Golf (The Evolution of a Legend) written by veteran golf course architect Richard Mandell. It is a story of dumb luck, ingenuity, and grand visions... Pinehurst ~ Home of American Golf is the untold story of one of the three most popular golfing destinations in the world: Pinehurst ~ Home of American Golf (The Evolution of a Legend). This 384-page, four-color history is more than just a coffee table book. It is a detailed account of the evolution of the playing fields of the Sandhills area of North Carolina and how it directly affected the game of golf in America. The book chronologically reviews the history of golf course development in the Sandhills and how it mirrored the growth, and often directed the evolution of golf architecture and development in the United States. Few authors have written books about Pinehurst. None of those writers has ever completed such a detailed review of an iconic landmark of the game of golf in the United States. Pinehurst ~ Home of American Golf reveals design, construction, and maintenance trends throughout the history of golf development. The book provides insight into the ingenuity and creativity of design and construction techniques of the past and how they relate to decisions made today. Articles from newspapers of the times will reveal the public s exposure to trends of the design industry whose details are not explored in most books written about golf architecture today. Reprinted letters from the major players (Donald Ross, Albert Tillinghast, Tufts family members, Herb Graffis, etc.)in the area give the reader a fly on the wall understanding of day to day operations and challenges. The design evolution of Sandhills golf courses is documented from pre-design site decisions to renovation projects throughout their history, to how these events have defined each golf course as it lays today. Specific design topics such as strategy, golf course features, rhythm of the holes, etc. will all be discussed. The reader will hear directly from the architect about design choices and challenges as well as construction tales which make each golf course s history different. Inside these pages is the story of The Pinehurst Resort, Pine Needles, Mid Pines Golf Club, Southern Pines Country Club, The Country Club of North Carolina, Tobacco Road, and countless other golf courses of the sandhills. Rare, never-before-seen photographs of the early days of sandhills golf include construction scenes of one of the most famous golf courses in the world as well as the only known construction drawings of Pinehurst No. 2. Another feature of Pinehurst ~ Home of American Golf (The Evolution of a Legend) is Mr. Mandell s detailed overlays of historic golf course routings of Pinehurst on top of an aerial photograph from today, allowing the reader access to history only an archaeologist can uncover. The reader can clearly see where features of the past would sit in the present day. Pinehurst ~ Home of American Golf is the definitive encyclopedia of Sandhills golf course history and teaches the reader about golf course architecture as it applies to these golf courses. It is written from my perspective as one of the few practicing golf course architects to have ever based my business in Pinehurst.

Top Five Reasons I Hate Nebraska" post. Keep a sense of humor, folks. Or not - just make sure you know who you're aiming at.
Do you feel that Missouri-Nebraska could be a new true rivalry in the making?

RMN: Just given the animosity from so many Missouri fans, I think you can go ahead and classify it as a rivalry, especially now that Nebraska fans are starting to reciprocate that hostility. The issue for Missouri fans is that, yes, Nebraska can be considered a rival (although Pinkel will deny it), but we refuse to allow anyone (cough*Tim Griffin*cough) say that NU is our "arch" rival. That distinction and that level of hate transcends football whenever Mizzou and Kansas get together.

But the development of the debatable MU/NU rivalry all depends on the legitimacy of the two teams involved. When was the last time the two teams played when they were both national threats? Never? If Nebraska climbs back into North contention and Missouri doesn't fall back into the abyss, I can see the rivalry growing stronger. Just don't ever consider yourselves as Missouri's primary rival.

Who's more responsible for the success of the Tigers - Gary Pinkel or Chase Daniel? (Notice I didn't even put the "s" on Daniel like I do sometimes to purposefully annoy you. If that isn't respect, what is?)

RMN: I think their contributions are indelibly linked together in the annals of Missouri football history. What is Gary Pinkel without Chase Daniel? He's a great guy who is a good but nowhere near great coach. What is Chase Daniel without Gary Pinkel? Perhaps a too-small quarterback relegated to playing in the I-formation because of the difficulties of Brad Smith's transition to the spread. I really hate to take sides here because so much of their individual successes are tied, but I'll give a slight edge to Daniel.

Chase is a transcendent, program-changing type of player and a ferocious competitor. But, one of Pinkel's best assets is pulling overlooked recruits out of nowhere and turning them into very solid players. Almost no one else thought Sean Weatherspoon, Danario Alexander or Ziggy Hood were Big 12-caliber recruits. Pinkel pulled them out of Texas, committed himself to them in exchange for loyalty to MU, and charged them with continuing the ascent of Mizzou football. That's the exact story of Chase Daniel, and that's exactly why I can't separate them. It's like trying to separate Sam Keller and Bill Callahan: history will judge them together.

Give your definition of a successful season for this Missouri team.

RMN: This team should, under no circumstances, fail to win the Big 12 North. Given the talent level on this team and the current state of the rest of the division, missing out on a Big 12 title game appearance would be a "fail" of the "epic" variety. From there, all expectations, hopes, dreams, and possibilities are thrown out the window.

The North title is the bare minimum, and about where the "expectations" end. No one should "expect" Missouri to win the Big 12, because let's face it, Oklahoma is a damn good football team, and Texas is looking strong as well. Would either of those be a hell of a game? Absolutely, but you can't burden this team with "requiring" them to win it to be successful. A Big 12 title and, if Missouri never has an off-game, a national title are both within the realm of possibility. But possibilities and expectations are two different animals.

How do you stop Missouri's offense?

RMN: Here's the three options for the blueprint to slowing down Mizzou:

1) First and foremost, you MUST be able to generate pressure with your defensive line. If you sell out on the blitz, you're leaving way too many weapons open for Chase. If you decide to rush only three, you'll return to the Cosgrove residence a few months later without a job after being torched for 606 total yards and 41 points on national TV (too soon?).

2) Turnover, turnovers, turnovers. Missouri's generally pretty good about protecting the ball, but when it bounces your way, your better pick it up AND you better turn it into points.

3) Have ridiculous athletes. Watching the Tigers in Norman last year and then watching them on TV in the Big 12 Championship, it was clear to me that the Sooner defense was one of the fastest I'd ever seen in person. The LBs and DBs were stride for stride with Mizzou's receivers, buying the D-Line time to get after Chase. The Sooners forced Missouri to play a lateral game rather than a vertical one, and it came back to Mizzou in the ass.

Last year, only Oklahoma was able to accomplish all of these things at once. There's a reason the Sooners beat Mizzou twice when no one else could.

Where would you put Missouri's defense nationally and why?

RMN: I don't know what Missouri ranks and for the sake of the question, I won't look it up. Missouri's defense seems very average, nationally speaking. The run defense is as solid as I've seen from Mizzou in a long time, and Sean Weatherspoon has been an absolute manbeast through four games. There are still issues with the pass defense as DC Matt Eberflus continues to find the right amount of blitzing, the right role for William Moore, and the right way to disguise Justin Garrett and Del Howard's deficiencies in pass coverage at the other safety spot.

That said, who knows what they have up their sleeve in conference play. Last year, Mizzou was AWFUL stopping the run in non-conference (Just say the name "Geno Blow" to a Mizzou fan and you'll see), but they were proficient at stopping the pass. Then came a bye week. Eberflus used the week to evaluate his players and his system and then transformed the unit into one of the Big 12's top three or four units. Does he have a similar trick up his sleeve in 2008? I certainly hope so.

What about Nebraska's team concerns you the most?

RMN: Honestly, the team itself doesn't scare many Mizzou fans. No one expects Nebraska to have much success running on Mizzou, as the run defense has been stout so far and neither Castille nor Helu nor Lucky are instilling the fear of God into anyone. Joe Ganz could be scary for Mizzou, given Missouri's pass defense thus far in 2008. But, with Carl Gettis at corner, Mizzou will take away your best receiver, so if any damage is going to be done through the air, the production is going to have to come from someone further down the "WR" column on the depth chart.

I doubt the defense is scaring anyone, even despite the addition of Pelini's coaching. From what you saw of Nebraska's defense in Columbia last year, would you be scared of that unit? Plus, the Virginia Tech game has Mizzou fans salivating for a chance to match this offense against the NU defense. Don't take it personally - there just many defense in the nation that you're going to find Mizzou fans scared of. It's part-arrogance/hubris, part-"this offense is just that damn good."

More than anything, Mizzou fans are scared of Lincoln. Missouri IS the better team, but means nothing college football these days. We held a poll asking what Mizzou fans are most scared of, and the run away answer with 76 percent was "It's in freaking Lincoln. Can you think of one good thing that's happened in Lincoln in my lifetime?" Granted, the same applied to Boulder and Manhattan before last year, but stranger things have happened.

Prediction?

RMN: Before the season, I predicted 31-20. After watching the first four games of the season, I no longer think it'll be that close or that low scoring. It will take a legendary effort from Pelini's troops to hold Mizzou to 31. I think Mizzou FINALLY wins in Lincoln by the score of 44-27.
Thanks to the guys from Rock M Nation.

Reraising Preflop
There are three main reasons for adopting a more aggressive reraising strategy to effectively combat the stealer. Reraising punishes the stealer, sets up profitable postflop play, and establishes variation.
1. Punish the opposition.
Im not the first person to suggest reraising to slow down your opponent on future action. In fact, Sklansky and Malmuth make it apparent that it is critical for your opponent to worry that a raise will cost more than it appears. As they say, He needs to know that hes in jeapordy of a reraise. Thus you frequently reraise for the sake of future hands, not the hand that you are holding.
But is reraising 10% of your hands enough? 10% represents the cream of the crop: AA-99 (6 possible combinations each), AK-AT(16 combinations each), KQ(16), KJs(4), KTs(4), QJs(4), JTs(4). These hands are so dominating that many of them would be 3-bet in a full ring game. Versus a steal raise, the selection is too thin.
More importantly, reraising 10% of the time will likely not even affect a blind stealing opponent who is raising 100% of the time preflop. Out of 10 hands, the stealer will immediately win the blinds 6 times, play on the flop against an out of position caller 3 times, and face a reraise only once. In this situation, even against a reraise, it becomes pretty easy for the small blind to fold if the flop doesnt hit him hard, since he knows he is competing against a premium hand.
2. Set up Flop play.
If youre going to be in the hand to the end, you might as well get the money in early. Im not sure where I read or heard the above advice, but it makes a lot of sense. With a powerful hand, you want to put pressure your opponent and make him pay for the right to outdraw you. You want to earn the most money possible, and fundamentally, you want to get your money in while you are ahead. (This is an oversimplification, but it works for shorthanded play due to a concept called .)
Mason Malmuth wrote about shorthanded play in Poker Essays, a good book for advanced players to hone specific theories. Concept No. 3: Be prepared to go to the river. Basically, if your hand is strong and unless the board develops in a very scary manner, you will often want to showdown. Since you will be going to the river with many hands, you should get the money in early, which makes a showdown strategy more likely to be correct and profitable in the long run.
A second factor is initiative. I mentioned above that most preflop stealers will not be affected by reraises, especially those raising 100% of the time preflop. In my experience, most opponents simply fold if the flop didnt hit their hand since they expect to be against a monster hand. Even those who do not habitually steal raise will still respect an opponent who reraised preflop. In other words, if you are the big blind and raise with a hand like JTs, you should virtually always bet on the flop, even if the flop misses entirely. Putting the pressure back on your opponent is critical. Opponents may simply concede on the flop, expecting to be against a very powerful hand and not wishing to pay a turn and river bet to see a showdown.
3. Establish variation.
The third reason to increase aggression preflop and reraise with a wider selection of hands addresses the predictability of the play. 10% narrows the possible hands considerably, and it creates an undeniable problem if the flop arrives with 3 rags. Under Sklansky and Malmuths advice, you would be reraising with big cards 3 out of 4 times; this is simply too predictable against even average competition.
So, what is appropriate for a reraise preflop from the big blind? What if we added 88-66(6 combinations each), KJo(12), KTo(12), QJo(12), QT(16), A9s-A2s(4 combinations each), T9s(4), and 98s(4)? The total is an additional 110 hands, which progresses the amount of reraising hands to 18.25% of total hands. Notice that most of these hands can be taken to a showdown, yet they create enough variation to make any flop potentially dangerous for your adversary.

Watching the opposition
An aggressive counterstrategy is only part of the equation. You will still be calling with other hands. You will still need to vary your play to keep your opponent off your scent. I recommend slowplaying AA or KK sometimes, reraising with lesser holdings on occasion, and following up with occasionally unpredictable flop play. Keep them guessing. Meanwhile, watch your opposition. Preflop, you will adjust your standards in the same direction as your opponent. If the small blind stops raising half the time, you should not call as often, since you will too often be playing bad cards with bad position, a costly combination. Reraising is still valuable but should be reduced as well. You want to slow down against an opponent who raises only with legitimate hands.
In addition, you must consider the postflop play of your opponent. If the opponent plays very well with position: earning extra bets, staying aggressive, and following a solid bluffing strategy, then he will earn a significant advantage each hand played on the flop. With your higher postflop burden, you must adjust by folding more preflop. Against an expert, you will fold quite often (and therefore call less than Sklansky and Malmuths recommended strategy). The important thing to note is that you will be losing money by folding the big blind more often. Repeat: YOU WILL BE VOLUNTARILY LOSING!!!! But you will lose less money folding than playing marginal hands that cost extra bets after the flop. Sometimes (often) you cannot win in the big blind of a heads-up matchup; your best choice is simply to minimize losses. Dont worry; youll make your profits when you are in position and have the advantage.
Slow em Down
Finally, a good preflop game will complement the overall strategy. Getting the money in early with the best hand will help to mitigate your positional disadvantage to some degree. But the best reason to stay aggressive may be intimidation. If you can scare your opponent into slowing down, you will begin to win the blinds for free, and you will not be forced to play at a disadvantage so often. In other words, you want your opponent to stop raising your blinds. So snarl (metaphorically) and attack back! Until next time, good luck.

A football jersey may be mass produced or custom made. The mass produced football jersey is the economical choice. A customer can choose the fabric, color, lettering and numbers when customizing a football jersey. Other choices for customization include length of sleeve and neckline shape.
Generally, the fabrics that are used to create a football jersey range from mesh, micromesh, polyester, Spandex, knit, twill and cotton blends. The fabrics are chosen because they are comfortable, durable, stretch, breathe and wash well under the circumstances. Depending on the weather, the jersey material may be lightweight or heavy.
The modern fabrics used in the construction of the football jersey are an improvement on football jersey material of the 1800s and later. The early football jersey were knit woolen shirts. Although these woolen jerseys were warm, they were prone to damage and soiling. Today, the woollen fabric is more expensive than the lightweight synthetic materials that are commonly used to make the modern football jersey.
Authentic jerseys have a larger size range than the football jerseys that are not authentic. An authentic jersey has a generous amount of room at the shoulders to accommodate the players shoulder pads. As well, an authentic football jersey needs extra length on the jersey because the shoulder pads will lift the shirt up on the wearer.
Feminine football fans can enjoy wearing a football jersey advertising their favorite football team. Football jerseys are available in womens sizes similar to mens sizes. Typically, womens jerseys can be purchased in sizes ranging from small to extra large. A womens football jersey has a smaller and more fitted shape. Youth sizes are available in S, M, L and XL for younger fans, too.
The autographed jersey is highly prized among fans and collectors. Many fans are lucky enough to have gotten an autographed jersey from their favorite player. Some autographed jerseys are auctioned off to the highest bidder for charity, public or private collection.
While football players choose from all two digit numbers for their number, there is a favorite number that pops up many times among football players on different teams. One of the most popular numbers that professional football players wear is the number 88. Football players, such as Marvin Harrison, Tony Gonzales, Michael Irvin, Alan Page and Lynn Swann, have chosen 88 as their number. 88 is also a popular number for fan football

jerseys.
Even though a football jersey was designed for the football player, the games popularity has made the football jersey a favorite apparel item among many football fans. Not only can the fan show support for their team, the comfort of the shirt enhances the wearers experience in the shirt. This effect is because the wearer is meant to be so comfortable and able to move in any direction possible necessary to make that touchdown.
The football jersey is a functional piece of clothing that has been adapted for everyday wear. The lightweight fabric, optional sleeve length, vibrant colors and affiliation with the game of football make the football jersey desirable enough to be worn in different seasons.
Dont miss another minute of your favorite football game. You can watch live football and watch soccer live right on your computer monitor.

Yes babeh, I went shoppping! :D I know it's kinda weird and wrong of me to go shopping during exam period but I swear it wasn't planned okay. My mum and I were suppose to meet my sis at Bugis to break fast together this afternoon. But apparently, someone couldn't make it at the very last minute so we decided to go Vivo instead to window-shop. (Yes, we didn't even intend to buy anything at first)Haha. Blame the shops for having so many nice things. Cause in the end, my mum and I bought 3 items each :D Haha. I bought a hoodie (which is really nice. And I've been wanting to buy one since June hols actually. Haha), a pair of shoe (With a little heels. I swear they're hot! Haha) and a shawl. :D Spent around 100 bucks today. I finally got to shop after two freaking long months. Yay me! :D

And I swear the world is really really small. I saw a lot of people at Vivo today. From ex - queenstownians to fellow schoolmates to even a friend's soccer coach. Hahah. Cool.

Anyway, Yesterday which was a Friday, was the start of exams. Yeah.. We had POA paper 2 and English paper 2. I think I did pretty okay for POA. The paper was manageable. And english.. let's just say a miracle is all I hope for. I hope I won't fail my english. *cross fingers* :D On monday will be elec geog and math paper 2. And yes, I'm gonna mug through the night tonight cause I didn't study much today in the day. Haha.

Guess what? It's four days to Hari Raya babehhh! :D Yay. Hahah. K I'm gonna start mugging now. Adios.

Western Flickers is told in a documentary fashion a la a 70s In Search Of-style show called s Legends and Mysteries. The narration is straight, and the footage and illustrations are presented as though we are watching an intriguing, recently-discovered nugget of western history and silent-era Hollywood folklore. The motion picture that Spikes and the Western Flickers company made, dubbed Hero of the Range, is seen in bits and pieces throughout the fake documentary. We are told that Hero of the Range was a hit in 1913, but through the years faded from memory, and by the end of the silent era no complete print of it could be found. But, alas, in 1997, a singing instructor found a trunk in her basement containing reels and reels of silent western films. And one of them just happened to be Hero of the Range.

Through proper education, society can develop programs to stop compulsive gambling addiction before it gets out of control. Its unfortunate that people are willing to educate themselves only after they have been negatively affected by gambling. In most situations the damage has been done.
When most people think of education they think of schools and books. When in reality every day we are educating ourselves about life from the time we get up. To Learn about compulsive gamblers all we need to do is observe their patterns. Breaking the patterns will help in the recovery process. All the signs are there, all we have to do is face the truth. You start to ask yourself more and more questions. What are we going to do? We are going to find all the resources available and apply them to our situation. Through this knowledge we will help to accerlate the recovery. The first area to look at is your understanding of what you are going through. It dose not matter if you are the compulsive gambler, friend of the compulsive gambler or related to the compulsive gambler. Your life has been affected. Its now time to focus. Educating yourself on compulsive gambling addiction will help you to plan for your future. You can have a wonderful future.
Its first important to understand the definitions of compulsive, gambling and addiction. Through knowledge you will gain a better understanding of compulsive gambling addiction and find new alternative ways to treat it.
Compulsive is an uncontrollable desire to do something.
Gambling is the wagering of money where the end result is uncertain and the individual is willing to take a chance.
Addiction is a craving that develops into a dependency to repeat a certain behavior over and over with out regard for the outcome.
Combine these three words and you have an uncontrollable desire to gamble where the outcome is uncertain that develops into a dependency.
Its unfortunate but most people can not tell that they have an addiction until they have developed a self destructive behavior that has negatively affected their life.
What causes a person to have a compulsive gambling addiction? No one knows for sure, but there are many similarities in the type of individual that have becomes addicted. If we can understand the type personality that is more susceptible to addiction, then we can at least safe guard ourselves. For example its an established fact that children of alcoholics have greater chance of becoming an alcoholic. Since there has been significant growth in the gambling industry more and more people have developed a compulsive gambling addiction.
Gambling is a common practice all over the world. Its believed that gambling dates back to the ancient civilizations where people would gather to take a chance even though the odds were against them.
People who are close to you, who have developed a compulsive gambling addiction will not show signs until a majority of their resources have been depleted. However these people exhibited negative social behavior inside the gambling establishments.
The gambling establishments are not regulated by law to stop people from recklessly throwing away their money. Even though these places know what they are doing to people, they recklessly destroy peoples lives for profits.
The gambling establishments have seen gamblers stay up for two days straight gambling and have not turned them off. They have allowed these individuals and other to max out their credit cards. No one did anything to help them. A bar is required by law to turn someone off if they appear to be drunk. Gambling establishments can also identify people who are in trouble. I have taken the opportunity to interview employees at gambling establishments. The employees all stated that they could tell who had a compulsive gambling addiction based on their repetitive behavior patterns. For example they would continuously go back and forth to the cash machine, they are there at all hours of the day and night when rational people would be sleeping, been seen in the same clothes for more then two days and there are many more signs. Why doesnt somebody do something about it?
When compulsive gamblers go out to the gambling establishments with friends or family they appear very conservative when they gamble at first. By the end of the night all the signs are there, but no one is paying any attention. A few signs are seeing them frequently go to the cash machine, not ready to leave when you are and they continually tell you that their luck is going to change with just one more bet.

Education is the key and increasing your knowledge will enable you to deal with your particular situation.
Mr. Keith believes there are many alternatives to aid in the recovery of a gambling addiction verses a twelve step program. A large percentage of his emails were from compulsive gamblers looking for an alternative to Gamblers Anonymous and twelve step programs. Gamblers Anonymous also helps a significant number of people each year but there is a large percentage that does not stay. These are the people Mr. Keith is hoping to reach.

Kevin’s Update From Australia

Metallica’s new album, Death Magnetic has leaked to the torrent community via some illegally pre-sold European copies.
Oh, the sweet irony.
Beyond the angle that one of the most publicly vocal bands against file-sharing is now having their files shared just for the fuck of it by torrent freaks worldwide, this has made me realize something else: My entire opinion of Metallica has been tainted so severely, that I cannot have an opinion about the new album.
I’ve tried.
Logic would tell me that it sucks. That’s how I hear it.
If James Hetfield was even an iota of self-deprecating (We suuuuuuck-ah!), I might not hear it as immediately horrible, and it’s that Metallica seems to be completely serious about releasing another album that sets my neurosis-engorged brain to turning.
I was a huge Metallica fan in middle and high school. They were my introduction to metal, in a certain way. I was listening to Metallica when I went to France, and in France I discovered the first KoRn album, and that got me into Nu Metal, which lead to Metallica and Tool superfandom.
Without trying to sell you on the excuses I whisper to myself late at night to justify this period, I really liked metal. Slipknot, System of a Down, and to a minor degree Stained, since a third alliterative band was needed.
Now, when I hear Stained, I think of visiting Alix when she worked at some sort of store that made smoothies. Stained comes with a taste. Linkin Park comes with an orlfactory memory; some guy sparking a joint during their set at Mile High when Alix and I went to our first Ozzfest. Our FIRST Ozzfest.
Metallica was my first concert. I attended it in the 8th Grade with Tai and his father Pat, our chaperone. It was at a venue called Fiddler’s Green, where the general admission was a hill the stages and seating were built around. The grass had long been trampled, and we picked a spot to generally mill around before Alice and Chains opened. A guy who looked like Stanta Claus, if St. Nick was a biker during the off-season, slapped Pat on the back and said: “Never too old for Metallica.” I was psyched to be there, because it meant I wasn’t at football practice with Mr. Payne, who probably hated Metallica. We had brought along two other guys: Ning and Greg. Greg was also on the football team with me, and might have even worn his jersey to the show until he bought a concert ticket (I might have romanticized this moment and altered my memory). Ning got sucked into a nearby mosh pit during the show, and Pat had to go in and fish him out, because he was a small Asian youth sucked into a his first pit. That’s the kind of guy Ning was.
I liked Metallica so much that I enjoyed both Load AND ReLoad on their own merits. I liked Metallica so much, I coughed up money online to get CD-Rs of burned material. I had to pay one guy twice because the first CD-R had failed in the burning process, as the technology was apt to do at the time. I liked Metallica so much, they were the first band whose logo adorned more than one of my t-shirts. I liked Metallica so much that I had their VHS box-set of tour videos. I liked Metallica so much, I own the Cunning Stunts DVD. Do you even know what that is and what it means about a person?
I mentioned the CD-Rs. Part of the upcoming total-betrayal-by-a-band-I-loved-and-further-disillusions is the specific time period that I was a high school student. Being a high school student is basically my excuse. I’d venture to guess that everyone experiences the existential pressures that come along with high school. You’re not thinking about it directly. When you’re thinking about what you’re going to do after school, what you are really thinking is: “I see myself acting a certain way, and it’s changing. Am I becoming the adult I’m going to be, or am I being someone else so other people will think I’m cool.” Some people answer that question for themselves very early on in high school. Lucky them.
Around this time, I started being in bands, I started listening to more music and – most importantly – I started using technology to make all these things easier. Record on a pirated ACID PRO copy, burn onto CDs, pass around songs, share albums with each other. Napster was big at the time. I think the first CD I saw downloaded from Napster and burnt onto a CD-R was Garbage Version 2.0 at Ty’s house with Matt’s portable CD burner. I can’t imagine it didn’t take all day to acquire the files form the service, transfer files that were reduced to a now-unthinkably-low bit rate, and burn the bastard at something like 2X speed. It was brilliance. More importantly, it was rewarding. This sort of file-sharing has stuck with me to this day, which is why I download entire discographies of people like Lil Wayne or The Mars Volta and just delete what I don’t love, just poking around to hear new things. The technology had a lasting impact that changed the way music worked forever.
Because Metallica couldn’t kill that. They were able to shut Napster down, ultimately failing because they didn’t realize they were in the middle of an industry-wide shift. And they looked like greasy, greedy fools to everyone out there, especially the fans who knew that Metallica only started getting gigs when they encouraged copies of their tape – titled Metal Up Your Ass – to circulate in the California underground tape trade.
Metallica then joined Michael Jackson in the pool of artists whose songs are interrupted with: “This is still awesome even though [they might molest children/they love money more than their fans]” when they are played during parties.
When Metallica released a live album with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, titled SM, the real fans kind of forgave them. Metallica looked to be over, they were rounding the career-horn, mining their material. Then Jason Newsted quit and I shut the lid; they might have been assholes, but their catalog was still solid, totally enjoyable (Master of Puppets? Still awesome.).
But they didn’t stay dead. Like really greedy zombies, they released St. Anger. They took Ozzy Osbourne’s bassist (and Ozzy got Jason Newstead in an ironic twist), did a live show in San Quentin and must have been partially deaf if they thought a snare drum should sound like an anvil for a whole goddamned album.
For the brief, financially woeful period I was sharing a bed with Nate Patterson, he woke me up with St. Anger only once. But the first thing I saw on some weekday morning was Nate standing over me, over-enthusiastically head-banging with his tongue out (and flapping) while thrusting the rock hand signal in the general vicinity of my face. Nate also woke me up with music from the WarCraftII PC Game, Hanson and a Slipknot track that is only screaming and distortion. Just to give you an idea of how much of a joke St. Anger was.
And for those of us not ready to hate Metallica because they made a bad album, Metallica released a documentary called Some Kind Of Monster about the making of St. Anger. Any respect I had for the men making the music that was, for so long, the soundtrack to my life was sucked out of me as if the movie was a Dementor from Harry Potter. Any good feelings I had about Metallica were sucked out of me and all I had were the sad, greasy feelings that I had been fooled by alcoholic complainers (James), spoiled whiners (Lars) and passive girly/robot men (Kirk) [to degrees, all descriptions overlap beyond the specified member]. Watching them all argue over lyrics they were writing together, or watching Kirk record his guitars and then leave James and Lars to argue over the stupidest alpha-male bullshit made me think that they had drunkenly stumbled their way into awesome metal music. They seemed, both on screen and on the album, like they were just throwing their musical feces against the wall, hoping to pile on enough logs to resemble the Mona Lisa if it was painted with shit by Jackson Pollack.
I’ve listened to most of the their new album, Death Magnetic, and I can’t not hate it. I hate them and I hate that they just kind of hope shit works out. I think Coldplay is (in the least offensive way ever, but just as a term in the common vernacular – and I know I shouldn’t even propagate the usage, but it’s so fitting) gay every time I read about them arguing over the track listing for their newest whatever release. But it’s a process that at least outwardly looks like a collaboration between musicians, showmen and businessmen, not some sort of I-Was-A-Teenage-Rockstar daycare: Metallica.
Their newest crime that motivated me to write the above mind-vomit? They’ve titled one of their tracks “The Unforgiven III” for reasons unknown. I suspect that they thought this would trick us into thinking: “This is like old Metallica,” which is their push for this album. But they left out the rising horn introduction that opened both “The Unforgiven” on the classic Black Album and “The Unforgiven II,” which itself was trying to send the “classic” message during their reinvention on Load and ReLoad, but at least they used the damn intro! This one’s bridge is literally: “Forgive me/Forgive-me-nots.”
I mean? Am I older and realizing it was always like this or does this suck more than usual?
That’s the quandary. What’s not is that the boys of Metallica remain The Unforgiven IV.
That’s how I’d end this piece if I was Dan Rather.

5 Comments Playing cards were invented by jesters, and were used to entertain royalty. In fact, each King in the deck represents a King from history, but thats another story. The point is: card tricks were invented before real poker games were. You need to be aware that not every poker player you play against is going to be a legitimate opponent, and may be either an opportunistic cheat (catching a glimpse of a card without saying anything) or a card mechanic (being able to rig the deck to his favour). The term Cold Deck refers to switching the deck to a deck that is physically colder than the one that was in play. Usually, the deck is pre-stacked and the dealer will perform a series of false cuts shuffles and then deal the cards. Of course, he wins the hand.
Online Casinos
Someone asked me whether or not online casinos (or casinos in general) rig hands. In legitimate casinos, Id say most definitely not - because theyre regulated quite strictly and would be out of business in no time at all. As far as online casinos go, well, thats a little bit different There are no checks in play to see whether theyre dealing fairly and randomly. Itd actually be quite feasible for them to deal two large-stacks strong hands, and build a significant pot in order to increase their rake. Doing this even 1 in 10 hands would increase the poker rooms income 2fold. By no means am I saying that online casinos are doing this, just that its possible and you should be aware of it.
Player Advantage
This ones a little more common, and easier to spot. This can only be done in either free tournaments or home games (or any sort of poker games where the deal is passed around). Player X has a stacked deck sitting under the table, rigged to his advantage, and is ready to swap it when the deal is passed around to him When it does, he swaps the decks, performs a series of false cuts/shuffles (quite easy for even amateur card mechanics to do) and then deals the cards He takes down a large pot. Watch out for players that pull the deck under the table when theyve got the cards in their hands. Make sure the deck is cut by another player before the hand is dealt.

So, I’ve been getting the vaccine against influenza for the last few years and as I had previously written it was usually Vaxigrip. I’m supposed to get it (paid for 100% by the employer) on Monday morning, but the thing is I’ve been battling a nasty cold and/or flu with a throat infection accompanied by fever and aches for the last 6 days.
I wonder if you can get the flu vaccine if you’re already sick. I know from previous years that it makes you feel slightly flu-like for 2-3 days afterwards. which is supposedly normal, since they are in essence injecting you with a variant of the influenza virus itself (what the ??)
Anyhow, I suppose the nurse on Monday will be the one who decides hopefully I’ll be better off and not so feverish by then. Having cold fingertips is a weird sensation.

Subject: [oconee] Field-based tour at federal Ag center

I hope you will consider putting this on your calendar -- a unique
opportunity on October 23rd to tour the prestigious federal agriculture facility
and field sites in Oconee.

I think opportunities like this can deepen our sense of place as we get
a first-hand look at the land and institutions around us.

This is the center whose funding is in jeopardy. The Senate
Appropriations Committee gave them a short reprieve, as I describe below
in the press release.

The Oconee Democrats are the sponsors of the tour, which is part of our
monthly issues forums that are free and non-partisan.

Even if you can't come, please glance at the information below. I
learned a lot about the important work they're doing while planning the
event with the scientists who work there.

The center really is worth saving! Come learn more about it!

Please send this to others who might be interested.

Field-based tour of J. Phil Campbell, Sr. Natural Resource Conservation
Center
Thursday, October 23rd, 2008
5:30 pm

With food prices rising precipitously and increasing pressures on water
and other natural resources, agricultural research has become all the
more crucial. And that research pays big dividends. Recent studies
show that each taxpayer dollar spent on agricultural research results in
returns of 20 to 60 percent to the nation's economy, resulting in lower
food and fiber prices and more product choices and abundance for
consumers. Soil and water are conserved and their quality improved,
too, when practices and protective measures derived from careful
research are implemented at farms in the United States and around the world.

The fate of the Oconee County, Georgia-based J. Phil Campbell, Sr. Natural Resource
Conservation Center (part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's
Agricultural Research Service) and its important, results-oriented work
hung in the balance earlier this year before the Senate Appropriations
Committee nixed the President's suggested budget cuts. They decided
instead to let the next President determine whether and where to make
cuts in agricultural research and other federal spending.

That reprieve allows more time for the public to better understand the
important research conducted at the 1180-acre federal facility just off
the bypass near downtown Watkinsville. To showcase some of the U.S.
Department of Agriculture's research underway there, the Oconee
Democrats are sponsoring a free, non-partisan, field-based tour of the
Center on October 23rd, a Thursday, at 5:30. Many of the Center's
scientists will be on hand to show visitors around research sites where
ecologists work with animal researchers, agronomists and microbiologists
to conduct problem-solving research that protects the environment while
fostering the agricultural profits that keep rural communities strong.

Visitors will meet at the J. Phil Campbell, Sr. Natural Resource
Conservation Center on Government Station Road (near the entrance to
Gainesville State College and the bypass, just off Experiment Station
Road). Attendees will be given an overview inside before heading out in
their cars on a three-mile route to stop at various sites near the
Center and along Hog Mountain Road.

Among the long-standing challenges researchers at the Center study in
the field are soil erosion, soil and water quality, the use and
management of animal manures, and water-saving strategies. The Center's
staff disseminates information to practitioners so that while boosting
yields, farming practices don't deplete the soil, harm watersheds, or
affect wildlife and human health. Other fieldwork addresses newer
topics such as the sequestering of carbon, especially important as the
United States and other countries look for solutions to global climate
change.

Because the Center has been in operation since 1937, the long-term
nature of some of the research provides important longitudinal findings
that are rare in any field. One of the research areas on the tour
showcases the advantages of combining cover crops with farming methods
called conservation tillage; sustained analysis over a 35-year period at
that site has reaped major contributions to understanding system-wide
effects on water and soil quality.

The October 23rd tour of sites around the Center is part of the Oconee
Democrats' monthly series of non-partisan, public lectures and events
organized to inform citizens about issues in the area and state. Becky
Vaughn, chair of the Oconee County Democratic Committee, said, "We put together this
non-partisan event because Ag research is non-partisan. We want
everyone to see how much value we get out of having this fantastic
federal facility in Oconee County -- one that provides vital support for
farmers throughout the Southeast while protecting the availability and
quality of our soil and water. We've got to come together to support
this facility.
